Has gaming become too serious?

There's no harm in taking to a game in a serious manner, after all, it can give the gamer the drive to play harder and leads to more challenging multiplayer.
But then there's the people who get killed three times, burst into a fit of rage and then leaves.
This is mostly everyone these days.
For me, personally, I believe online gaming has become too much of a commodity among the young, they take it for granted and not only are they far too competitive and serious, they are also become bad people with short tempers and anger problems.
In short, yes.
So do you believe gaming has become too serious?

There are always people like that, be it Call Of Duty, Mario Kart or Monopoly, and there always will be. The only difference is people can hide behind their gamertag to vent their frustration and not get punched in the face, in a way it's better than to let it stew.

In answer to your question, no gaming has not gotten serious, some people are just more competitive than others and online gaming simply fuels that fire.

Ragequitting has existed since the dawn of gaming. It's just that online multiplayer blew it up and put it on a giant hi-def screen.

I was going to say it's become less serious, as most games now are a cake-walk compared to older games. It makes them a bit harder to play seriously now.. -looks in Brawl's direction-.

But yeah, everyone has always had short tempers, you just never seen it before massive online multiplayer .

Calling someone a f****t who likes to suck Hitler's dick and should go kill themselves is a lot more acceptable when you're thousands of miles away from the person you're saying it to, as opposed to being right in front of them.

Basically, what everyone else said.

But what about those cases where Call of Duty players seeks out those who killed them in game and attack them irl?

I'd say just the opposite. Games these days like Call of Duty or Team Fortress don't push any lasting consequences for early mistakes like older games did. Power-ups and weapon pick-ups are rare in modern games, so a single player can't stock up and continue to dominate someone if they've gained an early lead. Team play is also very common today which lessons the conflict between individual players.

I think the rage we see so much of today is the result of easier gameplay. The core game no longer challenges the player as much; it tires to make him feel powerful instead. Facing a skilled opponent online is alien for those players brought up with easy fights.

Murder and assault has been happening long before video games.

So I'm guessing that in my example the gamers who attack the people irl who defeated them in game weren't at all serious?

I think his point was that it wasn't exclusive to gaming. Could happen over anything.

This. It has nothing to do with gaming being serious. It has to do with crazy people being crazy.

Completely opposite. Recently, new games are either retarded, or they're not as good as old school games. In the days of Banjo-Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Super Mario Bros., Pokemon, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, etc. games were hard, challenging and buttloads more serious. Nowadays with Gays of Wars, and this Call of Duty crap, gaming is seriously soft. Games will never be as hard as Crash Bandicoot ever again (a little happy about that) because the retards who only care about shooters are ruining our gaming market.
