A F2P mechnic that is bound to work

An idea.. You know how some games are free to play, but free players are at a direct disadvantage in abilities compared to paying players?

What is a game had a free to play side, but it was only on weekends? The bored person could pick it up on the weekends and play it then, but being limited to do something, by nature, makes you crave it more, thus they would subscribe.

Ideas?

Assuming nothing was out of bounds or limited on those weekends, most people could survive with only two days of playing a week.

You're comparing a F2P game to TF2, where the majority of TF2 isn't F2P at all.

F2P is a marketing tactic. It's the 'unlimited payments' scheme where you sell temporary benefits to an endlessly flowing stream of customers. Publishers get so many easy sales from in-game stores that you'd have to threaten them at gunpoint for anyone to even consider something else. Free to play games will continue to be unbalanced as long as it's profitable.

TF2 is just like any other F2P game. You can play the core game, but you'll have a huge handicap on what you can do. Once you've made a payment then there are still many more exclusive items left out of your reach without making further payments. The idea is that no matter how much you pay, you'll never have it all.
