Minecraft Reviewed
I think you all need to see this.
Now before you piss all over it for giving Minecraft a low score, I want you to seriously think about what was said in the review. These are all completely legitimate complaints and I have to agree with them. Would we really be okay with it if any other developer released a game as buggy and unfinished as Minecraft? Various review sites have already given Minecraft a 10/10; but have they actually considered it's worth in unbiased terms, or did they just give it a score we wanted to hear? Discuss.

Alright, I'll watch this and comment.
So wait, first he says the game would look ugly without 8-bit graphics, then states it's bad that the art is simple. And, to be functional, the game has to be cubes, so that's a null complaint. Combat. Boring? Maybe. Easy? Dohohoho no And, to be fair, the mobs are only there to give you a reason to build a shelter. NPCs? Yeah, they really should have fleshed them out before releasing it as a full product. And these obnoxious popups just seem like stereotypical pro gamer talk. Like, the pro gamer talk that I didn't think actually happened. "Maybe you'll win an award for your stolen Pokemon sprites." It seems like these are just the kind of guys that are like "It takes little skill so it's bad." Yes, how dare Notch add features from mods that people liked? CURSE YOU NOTCH Duplication glitches in the final version? No other commercial game (barring Pokemon, Oblivion, Dead Island, and others) has ever had that! DAMMIT NOTCH "You can get the rarest items in an hour." But... It's a game about building. So getting enough of those rare materials to build something significant out of will take some time. Agreed on the biomes; transitions are ugly, no excuse. Isn't the poison more effective on harder difficulties? Idk, someone confirm that for me. "LOL PEOPLE THINK CREEPERS ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE LOL" Um, no. But if they get close enough, they mess up your building. Or did he spend the whole game running around instead of building? And yeah, the End was definitely an afterthought. I'd say maybe 1 out of 10 users will actually use it as a goal, though. "People socialize and build things together... I don't get it" Well then, it's not his type of game. Whatever. Oh hey, a joke about how all Minecraft players are autistic. Haven't heard that before. It really seems like he hates the 10/10 scores (which are indeed unwarranted, unless you base it on fun. Which is never what a review is solely based on, no sarcasm.) and the community. Now we're reaching the petty "Let's Complain About Notch" segment. Sure, a large percentage said they wouldn't go to Minecon, but then 30,000 did, and I'd think that's enough people to have a convention, hm? So wait, a guy makes millions of dollars on a game, and you scold him for spending it? What is this? It isn't slave labor communist Russia. This is the core of capitalism: you earn money to better yourself. Notch didn't make Scrolls. So wait, why trust a review that spends half the game constantly berating Notch? It seems very biased. I compare this review to Yahtzee... Just, y'know, FLAW FLAW FLAW FLAW FLAW I HATE YOU. Yeah, a few of his complaints about the actual game are legitimate, but every other complaint he has is a personal attack on Notch. tl;dr: Yes, the flaws he pointed out were legitimate and Minecraft does not deserve the 10/10s it's getting. But it is still a legitimately fun game for those who enjoy it and I feel I spent my money well in buying it. Though it's hard to take this review seriously, what with the obvious bias. |

The main difference being that yahtzee is hilarious, and this guy is a ripoff of him. (seewhatididthere?)

I find it odd that people seem to make such a big deal out of this being the release. Obviously they aren't done with the game, and updates will still roll out pretty often. In fact, over the past three months, the game's content has easily tripled when it comes to The End, enchantments, materials, and tons more. Compare that to the last seven months before those three, and you'll see that the core game mechanics didn't change much during that time.
Then you'll say, "But if it isn't finished, why would they "release" it?" That's a good question - one that I can't answer. Only Mojang could could give an explanation as to why they wanted to mark it as released. Perhaps they were tired of the beta sign? I don't know. Keep in mind that hundreds of games have gotten constant updates after being released, MMOs coming to mind first. WoW's content has essentially quadrupled since it's release, and because of those constant updates it has stayed relevant for many years. If Minecraft goes the way of WoW with updates large enough to spark interest in those who played it before, this game will not only profit even more than it already has, but keep the players interested for a damn long time to come.

Was about to post this, but yeah I agree with the majority of the claims. I do think it's a decently fun time killer and worth the price I paid for alpha, but I am majorly disappointed at the direction that it went instead of the one it could have gone. Notch is also appearing more and more as a dick as time passes.
btw The Best Gamers is a satirical site. This review was 75% serious, but all the "pro gam3r" talk is a part of its satire. I'd give it a 6.5/10 perhaps. Last edited by Balobo; 25th November 2011 at 03:17 AM. |

I think Minecraft is a brilliant concept, but it is held hostage by a mediocre developer. If Minecraft was under the guidance of a professional team, I'm sure it would have turned out to be full game instead of a sandbox toy. Ever since the game became widely popular, Notch began to add several half-finished features that really don't fit in with each other. I wonder if even he knows what direction he was taking it.
I'd also like to point out that version 1.0 is what the 360 is getting. Notch cannot just release an update to the 360 version on a whim like he could with the PC alpha. He first has to go through copious amounts of red tape laid out by Microsoft before he can publish any new content, and Microsoft won't want him releasing new features for free anymore. Notch is diving headfirst into some deep waters, and I highly doubt his swimming abilities.

I would think Microsoft would work with them since they approached Mojang first.

No, the process a developer has to go through to do a title update on an Xbox 360 game is ridiculously convoluted, so much so that Bungie actually decided to forgo them completely, and instead developed a scripting engine which would allow them to make changes to the game without the need for a title update. What that says to me is that it is easier for a company to develop a piece of software specifically with the circumvention of title updates in mind than it is for them to do a standard title update through Microsoft.
I very much doubt that the PC game and the 360 game will be updated in parallel. Either this is the end of regular, free Minecraft updates (as Notch indicated on his blog), or the two versions of Minecraft are going to end up being two very different things.

I find it funny how everybody used to love Minecraft and now it seems like it's getting a lot of haters. Oh well, I guess it happens to anything that's popular
![]() Seen the review, he does have some points. I just think he didn't show enough of the actually good things of the game, like exploring and he basically ignored the building, which's one of the main aspects.

Don't pull the bullshit "it's only hated because it's popular" saying.

We've explained that this is a pretty serious review. However, even if they are trolling, everything they said is true.

If it's popular, it also means more people who aren't into that kind of game will hear about it and naturally hate it. I didn't mean they necessarily hate it because it's popular.
