You either 'get' Minecraft or you don't. This reviewer does not.

Or - stay with me here this could blow your mind - the popularity of the game and Notch's fanbase had nothing to do with the review.

It did. I see nothing to suggest that it didn't.

There's something different about it now. Perhaps just the charm of playing it for the first time. I got a tundra world and didn't know how to craft. I punched stone for a bit and climbed a mountain. It was fun! And then Whyme made me play multiplayer and now single player is empty.
It's not deserving of a 10/10, it's buggy still, and while fun is a big factor, it's features and performance are equally as important... Does the memory overrun error still occur? Mine crashes very frequently when playing on larger severs... Not entirely the game's fault anyway. Annoying nonetheless... It's a good game though... Sometimes.

Ok. Hold on to something. Your mind could potentially be blown again:
Some people like MineCraft a lot more than you do. Seriously, just because someone gives a game a 10 doesn't mean they're pandering to someone behind the scenes or have some sort of ulterior motive. Sometimes they just like the game that much. Holy shit.

You keep bringing up number systems and Metacritic like it actually means something. For one guy, a 10 could easily mean "yeah, the game's flawed to hell, but man is it fun! Goplayitgoplayitgoplayit." and for another person a 10 can only mean "Absolutely flawless. The perfect video game in every way possible. Play this or you're retarded."
And why even pander to Notch's fanbase? They have absolutely nothing to gain from it. Mojang is an indie developer, so it's not like they're getting much cash. Minecraft fans haven't proven to be malicious in any way so it's not like they're covering their asses or anything. It's much more likely that they just like the game and give tens to games they like.

And yes, they have everything to gain by giving a perfect score. Professional reviews are paid for by advertising, they want to attract more people to their site so they can get more ad revenue. Being the first to give one of the most well known games this year a perfect score will attract a lot of publicity. I should also point out that most of Minecraft's main fanbase are people who don't usually like video games. The simple sandbox game appeals to them the same way Farmvile does. It shouldn't be too hard to understand why it is so over-rated.
