just a few thoughts...

lately, (just a few seconds ago, really) i did a bit of thinking, and I thought about all of these new video games with their fancy graphics and whatnot. But i played a video game last night, see. and what did I play? Sonic the Hedgehog 2, for the genesis. boy, was this colsole the greatest! i remember coming home from school and playing it before my brothers got home. anywho, my science teacher has a thing for Atari 2600. i'm the only person in my class who can discuss such games because nobody else can believe that Pong can be enjoyable! but yes, even in todays world of fancy computers and graphics, good games shine through. now, on to the piont of this- ehh... oh yeah, do you think that nowadays, a brand name (like Rare) is something that you track and wait for, more than a game that someone reccomended? Just a topic for discussion, i probobly put it in the wrong forum anyway (i'm lost, and forgot where i am).

i plan to but Super Mario Brothers 3 for the GBA, so i won't have to blow on, spit into, and clean the cart every time i feel like playing it.

and by the way, i hate 3D football games. i just do.

Back in my day we didn''t have all these fancy graphics! 16 pixels a screen was good enough........

Seriously, it's important to know that quality doesn't mean fancy. The old ones are still good.

A lot of the oldies are pure classics. A lot of the times nowadays we concentrate too much on fancy graphics, and forget that simple gameplay can be the most enjoyable.

I've been playing some SNES lately, and no one can forget how great Final Fight, UN Squadorn, and Contra III were. Although I'll always like N64 best, SNES is a very close second, and the new consoles cannot compare.

Contra III! Man, that game is awsome. I found an old Contra III review here.

A lot of people think graphics are what make video games cool. I pitty them, I really do. Because, while some good games have good graphics, it's not the majority. I play Mario Brothers (first) and it's fun. I play Maro Sunshine, I get bored. It a matter of (my) opinion

So very true... I remember when I was about 6, I first played SMB:3. ^^ Loved it, and I can't wait to buy it on the GBA. The first game I ever played was Super Mario Brothers... yep. Heck, I remember the whole thing with the cart. I'd have to whack the NES and blow on the cart for about half an hour before it worked. Right now I'm playing the first Final Fantasy (well, the PS remake in Origins) and I enjoy it.

I am in complete awe. I was going to mention Contra III for the SNES. Yud did it for me I see? I also like Super CastleVania for the SNES.

I haven't played a lot of thes old games you guys are talking about, but I know what you mean. Simple gameplay is what I like the best. Like Twisted Metal 2 compared to Black, or Crash 2 compared to a lot of the newer platformers. Ocarina, Final Fantasy VII, and TM2 were some of the Great Ones that will never be replaced. I really don't like it how games now seem not as fun as they used to. It's great how they kept Contra: Shattered Soldier nice and simple. From what I've heard, it stays very close to how the older Contra games were.

I played Sonic 1-3, btw and they are really fun.

The days of the PSX and other older systems, the good ol' days...

You want to talk about the best video game ever? One Word:
Pong.

That game was so brilliant, yet so simple.

Or Tetris, which is one of the most brilliant concepts ever. Alexi Pajitnov (sp?) = genius.

It is indeed true that graphics don't make a game. Gran Turismo 3 has/had great graphics, for example, but I didn't like it very much. Graphics and sound are essentially the icing on the cake, while the gameplay is the cake itself. If you don't like the cake, you may not like the icing, but you might like the icing anyway. It works the other way: if you don't like the cake, you may not like the icing, but you might really like the cake, anyway.

Sometimes you like the cake so much that, while you're supposed to be concentrating on your PSATs, you have thoughts about bringing the plate (console) back out from wherever it was. This was the case last weekend: I was taking my PSATs, and I couldn't stop thinking about hooking my Genesis up again, even if it was just for a couple hours. (It's a good thing that I remembered what cables went where when I re-attached the TV and VCR, as well as the cable TV signal.)

Ok, I'll stop now.
