Help GM Build A Computer! :D

Okay, so I'm on a budget of $250. Here's the parts I need...
  • Motherboard
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Power supply

The processor I at least want to be a quad core, maybe if I'm lucky 3.0 GHz per core. As for RAM, I'm hoping to get around 8 gigs of DDR3. I don't really care much about the motherboard as long as it supports what I've listed above. I already have a HDD, and I plan on keeping my nVidia GeForce 9500GT which still works pretty well given it's somewhat out of date. Lastly, the power supply. Obviously that'll come last after we figure out how much power the other parts need.

tl;dr know of any good parts that I can get for a total of ~$250?

RAM is and always has been fairly cheap, so any will really do. your motherboard should be the first thing you pick out so that you can make sure the other parts you pick are compatible. I'm not sure you can get all of that for 250 bucks though. but if you're on a budget, an i5 processor works fine and is better if you're on a budget, over an i7.

Give me 300 to work with, or you're going to be skimping as much as a playboy bunny in a snowstorm.

Anyway, this board is pretty good, and it is on sale.

Note that if you skimp on your board, you might as well not get anything.

Would it be cheaper to build your own high-end computer than to buy a ready-made one? Like something fast that can handle new games at top settings.

Almost always, yes. A few reasons:
- You know what you are buying. You're not buying stuff that you do not need
- Almost always going to reuse something, be it the case, gpu, heat sink, or hard drive
- You're not buying a windows 7 license.

It isn't highly futureproof, but it runs what I need for the time being. I'm content.

@Pez: Almost always buy your own stuff and build it yourself. You'll be much better off in the end.

If that is the case, see if you can reuse your current one

I'm sure you'd want a decent video card too. Thing is, most good VC's are, like, 100 or so bucks by themselves. Of course, there's a chance you'll just save up for one of those later huh...

I can't upgrade my card at the moment. I need the essentials first. Card upgrade comes when I get some more money. Besides, the 9500 is fine for now.
