Description

Bananas are the favorite food of Donkey Kong and the rest of the Kongs, so much so that DK owns an entire hoard of them in a cave near his tree house. Bananas are commonly found in bunches, and there is also a special variety of Golden Bananas.

In the Games

Donkey Kong Country

In Donkey Kong Country, the Kong's Banana Hoard is stolen by King K. Rool and his Kremlings one night while Diddy is guarding it. He ends up being overpowered by the Kremlings, stuffed in a barrel and tossed aside as the Kremlings run off with the bananas. The next morning, Donkey Kong wakes up to find that his bananas and his best friend are both missing and, after finding Diddy, sets out to get his bananas back by following a trail of carelessly dropped bananas left by the Kremlings.

In this game, bananas are collectible items. Collecting 100 bananas will earn the player an Extra Life Balloon. Bananas appearing in this game include single bananas, banana bunches (worth 10 bananas), and giant bananas, which are won from boss battles against K. Rool's largest and toughest cronies.

Donkey Kong Land

In Donkey Kong Land, Cranky Kong complains that the Donkey Kong's first adventure was a fluke, and that his success was only due to the fancy graphics. He then dares DK and Diddy to do the whole adventure again on an inferior console, the 8-bit Game Boy. They accept, and so Cranky Kong calls up King K. Rool, instructing him to capture the Banana Hoard again.

In this game, bananas are collectible items and work the same as in Donkey Kong Country.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, bananas are again a story focus. One day, Kaptain K. Rool kidnaps Donkey Kong as he naps on the beach, and leaves a ransom note for the rest of the Kongs, demanding the Banana Hoard in exchange for the safe return of DK. Diddy and Dixie Kong then head to the dangerous Crocodile Isle, home of the vile Kremlings, in order to rescue Donkey Kong themselves.

In this game, bananas are collectible items and work much the same as in Donkey Kong Country. This game also introduces Banana Coins, which are used as currency.

Donkey Kong Land 2

In Donkey Kong Land 2, bananas are collectible items and work the same as before.

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, bananas are once again collectible items and work just as before. This game also introduces Banana Birds, strange birds resembling bananas, which are found in hidden areas around the Northern Kremisphere. The game also features green-colored bananas, which are used for certain Bonus Rooms, where the goal is to collect all the green bananas before time runs out.

Donkey Kong Land III

In Donkey Kong Land III, bananas are collectible items and work the same as before.

Diddy Kong Racing

In Diddy Kong Racing, bananas are scattered across the game's racetracks. Collecting up to 10 bananas during a race will increase the speed of the player's current vehicle.

Donkey Kong 64

In Donkey Kong 64, King K. Rool builds a doomsday device, a laser gun called the Blast-O-Matic, which he plans to use to destroy the DK Isles. In order to distract Donkey Kong, so that the Blast-O-Matic can have time to charge, K. Rool steals Donkey Kong's Golden Bananas and kidnaps Diddy Kong, Tiny Kong, Lanky Kong and Chunky Kong.

Regular bananas are collectible items in this game. They come in five colors: yellow for Donkey Kong, red for Diddy Kong, purple for Tiny Kong, cyan for Lanky Kong, and green for Chunky Kong. There are 100 of each character's bananas on each world (excluding Hideout Helm), making 500 total bananas on each. For every 75 bananas of each type collected in a world, the player earns a Banana Medal. Bananas are also used to access the game's boss fights: the player must feed a certain number of regular bananas to Scoff and Troff in each world in order to open the boss doors (excluding the final battle against King K. Rool).
