Description
It is a small roofed house, painted in blue. The house is actually a single room, which contains a bed, a cuckoo clock mounted on the wall, a dresser with a fishbowl on it, a vase of flowers, a stove, a blue chair, a bookshelf, a fireplace, a green and yellow rug, and some pictures on the wall. The opening scenes of Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts all involve Banjo's house in some way.
In the Games
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo's house is a small one-room bungalow cottage situated in a corner of the calm and tranquil cliff-enclosed grasslands of Spiral Mountain in the Banjo-Kazooie game series. The exterior of the cottage has been painted a purple shade of blue, has three circular yellow windows (one of which is at the side of the house), a yellow door, a grey, slate roof and a brown chimney. The architecture of the building is somewhat curious as it has been built directly into the cliff-side, and has taken on a certain multi-perspective appearance as a result of this. The cottage has a small, fenced-off garden area in front of it - with various flowers planted there. Some rubbish cans are to the left of the house. Inside, the house consists of one box-shaped room. The orange wallpapered interior is small, but the space has been used effectively. A large, circular, green rug covers most of the wooden floor. The windows are bordered by purple curtains, which flap in the wind. On the left, Banjo's wooden, four-poster bed, with blue, chequered duvet and white pillow occupies most of the floorspace. Beside it, there are two wooden chests of drawers, both of which have a vase of flowers placed on them. The one on the left also has a photograph of Tooty on it, and the one on the right has a goldfish bowl, in which Roysten carries on swimming in circles and hitting his head off the bowl which houses him. Above the left-hand chest is a picture of what is presumed to be Fungus Forest - a world which was at one point intended to be featured in Banjo-Kazooie. Beside the other chest is a large photograph of Tooty - beside which hangs a purple cuckoo-clock. Opposite the door is the food-preperation area - an indented and bricked section of the back wall which contains a stove, blue cupboards, pots and pans and two towels (one red, the other blue - presumably for Kazooie and Banjo respectively). The right-hand wall is predominated by the red-brick fireplace, over which hangs a photograph of Bottles. Beside the fire, there is a large, comfy blue easy chair. On either side of the fireplace, bookshelves stretch the length of the wall - each filled with books of varying colour and care of placing. Hung above the bookshelves, in a corner of the room, is a photograph of the sunset beach featured at the end of the game - its purple hues casting a calming atmosphere over the room.
Bottles' Bonus
In Banjo-Kazooie, if the player stands on the edge of the carpet nearest the fireplace and look at Bottles' portrait in first-person mode, it allows the chance to play a series of moving picture jigsaw puzzles known as Bottles' Bonus puzzles. Completing each puzzle unlocks a cheat that can be entered in Treasure Trove Cove's sandcastle. These cheats change Banjo and Kazooie in humorous ways, such as giving them oversized heads or changing them into a washing machine.
Banjo-Tooie
In Banjo-Tooie, Banjo's house is completely destroyed from the inside when Gruntilda blasts it with a powerful spell. It remains in this state of disrepair throughout the game. As most of the house and Banjo's possessions are destroyed, the house serves no real purpose in the game other than as a story point.
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, the interior of Banjo's house serves as the game's main menu. In addition, it can be seen from outside in Spiral Mountain, still in a state of disrepair, now featuring a large dumpster and a tombstone of Bottles nearby (referencing his death in Tooie) near it. Banjo and Kazooie have seemingly never fully repaired it due to laziness. The house cannot be entered in the main game, and is only fully seen from the inside on the game's starting menu screen. The house is finally repaired at the end of the game.
Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge
In Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, the house looks much the same as it did in Banjo-Kazooie, except oddly more purple. Of note, Roysten is apparently still on the barbecue grill outside the house.
Banjo-Pilot
In Banjo-Pilot, trophies that have been won (along with Roysten) are displayed in Banjo's house.
Beta References
One of the pictures within Banjo's house is rumoured to represent the beta worlds Fungus Forest. However, the first picture appears to be Banjo standing in one of the Donkey Kong Country jungles. In the Xbox Live Arcade port of Banjo-Kazooie, the "Fungus Forest" picture is replaced by one of Banjo walking in the Click Clock Wood lobby of Gruntilda's Lair. The most likely reason for this is that they wanted to revamp all the portraits in high-resolution, but did not have a high-res version of that picture. Therefore, they simply replaced it with a similar one.
Pre-release screenshots of Banjo-Kazooie show that a photograph of Donkey Kong was once in place of the larger photo of Tooty. This further suggests that there was a connection planned between Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo-Kazooie at one point.
Another pre-release screenshots of this game featured the inside of the house much darker, and Banjo's bed having dark green covers instead of blue.
