Donkey Kong Country
In Donkey Kong Country, Bonus Rooms are found in many levels, and are typically hidden within breakaway walls and invisible Barrel Cannons. Finding all of the Bonus Rooms is required to finish the game with 101% completion. Once all of the Bonus Rooms have been found in a level, that level will be marked with a "!" after its name. Bonus Rooms need not be "won" for completion; they merely need to be entered. The prizes earned from a Bonus Room depends on its type. It is worth noting that, in one instance, there is actually a Bonus Room hidden within another Bonus Room.
Bonus Room types in Donkey Kong Country:
- Hoard Rooms: These rooms typically contain a large number of items, such as bananas, which are easily collectible.
- Barrel Cannon Rooms: These rooms typically contain Barrel Cannon "puzzles," where navigating the Barrel Cannons properly will earn items such as bananas or Extra Life Balloons.
- Matching Game Rooms: These rooms contain three barrels hanging in the air. The first barrel flashes through various Animal Tokens, and touching the barrel will make it stop on a certain Animal Token. The next barrel will then begin flashing, and so on. Matching three Animal Tokens of the same type earns one Animal Token of that same type.
- Letter Rooms: These rooms contain letters floating in the air in a circle, which spell things like "DONKEY," "KONG," "NINTENDO," and "RARE." Touching the letters in the proper order in order to spell the word properly will earn an Extra Life Balloon.
- Klaptrap Rooms: These rooms contain a number of Klaptraps, which spit out banana bunches when bounced on. Each time a Klaptrap spits out a banana bunch, it also begins moving faster. The goal is to jump on all of the Klaptraps enough times to defeat them without being bitten by them.
- Animal Token Rooms: These rooms are the only Bonus Rooms that are do not add to the game's percentage meter. When three Animal Tokens of the same type (Rambi, Enguarde, Expresso or Winky) are collected, the player will enter a Bonus Room as the respective Animal Buddy, filled with its Animal Tokens. Every 100 of these tokens collected earns the player an extra life, and so the goal is to collect as many as possible before time runs out.
Donkey Kong Land
In Donkey Kong Land, Bonus Rooms are similar to how they appear in Donkey Kong Country. As before, they are commonly found through breakable walls and hidden Barrel Cannons and Bonus Rooms do not need to be "won" for completion.
Bonus Room types in Donkey Kong Land:
- Hoard Rooms: These rooms typically contain a large number of items, such as bananas, which are easily collectible.
- Token Game Rooms: These rooms make use of the Kong Tokens which can be collected in the levels. The room consists of a spinning barrel moving from left to right and back again, and a button. Stepping on the button will cause the player's Kong Tokens to be shot out of the barrel. Collecting the Kong Token after it leaves the barrel wins the player an extra life.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Bonus Rooms are found in every level, and are typically located in breakaway walls, hidden entrances, and hidden Bonus Barrels. Finding and completing all of the Bonus Rooms is required to finish the game with 102% completion. Once all of the Bonus Rooms have been completed in a level, that level will be marked with a "!" after its name. The prize for successfully completing a Bonus Room is a Kremkoin (except in the Lost World, where the prize is a Hero Coin).
Bonus Room types in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest:
- Find the Token: The coin is hidden somewhere in the Bonus Room, and it must be found and collected within a time limit.
- Destroy Them All: All of the baddies in the Bonus Room must be defeated within a time limit, which will cause the coin to appear and allow it to be collected.
- Collect the Stars: All of the golden starts in the Bonus Room must be collected within a time limit, which will cause the coin to appear and allow it to be collected.
Donkey Kong Land 2
In Donkey Kong Land 2, Bonus Rooms are much the same as in Donkey Kong Country 2.
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, Bonus Rooms are very similar to those in Donkey Kong Country 2; however, the prizes for completing them are now Bonus Coins, and Bonus Rooms are always located in Bonus Barrels. AS ever, finding and completing all of the Bonus Rooms is required to finish the game with 103%/105% completion (final percentage also depends on difficulty setting; for more information, see List of cheats in Donkey Kong Country 3). Once all of the Bonus Rooms have been completed in a level, that level will be marked with a "!" after its name.
Bonus Room types in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!:
- Find the Coin: The coin is hidden somewhere in the Bonus Room, and it must be found and collected within a time limit.
- Bash the Baddies: All of the baddies in the Bonus Room must be defeated within a time limit, which will cause the coin to appear and allow it to be collected.
- Collect (x) Stars: A certain number (specified in place of "x") of golden starts in the Bonus Room must be collected within a time limit, which will cause the coin to appear and allow it to be collected.
- Collect 15 Bananas: 15 Green Bananas, which appear briefly in different parts of the Bonus Room, must be collected within a time limit, which will cause the coin to appear and allow it to be collected.
Bonus Rooms in this game can also be modified with the "MERRY" cheat code. When this code is entered, all Bonus Rooms play a Chirstmas-y musical tune (titled "Jangle Bells"), Christmas ornaments are collected instead of stars, and gifts are collected instead of Green Bananas.
Donkey Kong Land III
In Donkey Kong Land III, Bonus Rooms are much the same as in Donkey Kong Country 3, with the exception that the "Collect 15 Bananas" game is gone, and the "Collect (x) Stars" game is now "Collect All the Stars."
