Devil Bottles explaining the premise.

Bottles' Revenge is a scrapped competitive side-game in Banjo-Tooie in which a second player can control the game's baddies during the single-player adventure using the character of Devil Bottles. Originally believed to have been removed before release, it was finally uncovered by Ice Mario and SubDrag on September 27, 2004.

Bottles' Revenge is unable to be accessed without the use of a cheating device. According to Rare, the reason it was scrapped was because they ran out of time to properly debug it.[1]

Description

Bottles' Revenge begins with a cutscene showing Angel Bottles turning into Devil Bottles and explaining the premise of the game. Player 2 can control any baddies near Devil Bottles (such baddies are marked by white "sparklies"), and can switch from one baddy to another with a press of the N64 R.png button. Typically, while controlling a baddy, the N64 B.png button on the Nintendo 64 controller will utilize an attack, and the N64 A.png button will utilize a secondary ability (for instance, hiding under or jumping out of the ground for Glitter Gulch Mine's Billy Bob baddies). When no controllable baddies are in the immediate area, Devil Bottles floats ominously over Banjo, Kazooie and Mumbo. None of the non-player characters react to Devil Bottles looming over the characters, so it is possible only the three can see him.

Notes

  • Bosses are not controllable by player 2. When their respective boss room is entered, Devil Bottles remarks that he doesn't think he's needed and disappears until the battle ends. Rare explained in an edition of Scribes that boss control had been planned, and they even got so far as testing the idea out with Old King Coal before the mode had to be dropped.[1]
  • Mingella and Blobbelda are controllable by player 2 during the Tower of Tragedy quiz show.
