Biography

Canary Mary is a strange character who appears to be half human, half canary, or at least an old lady in a costume who has deluded herself that she is a canary. She works in Glitter Gulch Mine; her job is to go in before the miners and find out if any areas are filled with poison gas. If she doesn't come back, they know it's not safe.

In the Games

Banjo-Tooie

In Banjo-Tooie, Canary Mary can first be found in Glitter Gulch Mine, where she is locked in a cage in a cavern filled with poison gas. Banjo and Kazooie must break open her cage, setting her free. She will then fix the broken handcar that has been sitting on the tracks which run throughout the level, and challenge Banjo and Kazooie to a race. The birdwoman will fly above the tracks as Banjo operates the handcar by rapidly pressing N64 A.png or Button a.png. If the player wins the first race, Mary will hand over a Jiggy, which apparently she has been keeping with her in a location on her body that Kazooie would rather not hear about. She will then challenge Banjo and Kazooie to a rematch. Winning this rematch earns a Cheato Page. After being beat a second time, Canary Mary flies out the mines.

Banjo and Kazooie encounter her again in Cloud Cuckooland, where she challenges them to another race. This time, Banjo must sit on a wind-up mouse, though it is operated in the same fashion, by rapidly pressing N64 A.png or Button a.png. This race is known for its incredible difficulty. There are various methods used by players to beat this race. A popular tip is that Mary's speed reflects the player's, so if they don't give it their fullest effort, neither will she. Just like in the mine, if the player manages to beat Mary here, they will get a Jiggy, and then can compete in another rematch for a Cheato Page.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (Cameo)

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Canary Mary is mentioned by the Lord of Games in one of his randomized Showdown Town quotes: "Remember Canary Mary? Did you have fun racing her? How I laughed when I was setting up those levels. I'm still laughing!"

She also is mentioned in Banjoland, on an Info Point relating to Glitter Gulch Mine. It states that her races were originally based around control stick rotation, but this was changed when it was found to be incredibly uncomfortable to play.
