Biography
Clanker is a mechanical whale who reluctantly serves as Gruntilda's garbage grinder. Empirically, Clanker's species is difficult to deduce: although he has a blowhole, indicating that he is a whale, he also sports gills, which suggests that he is a kind of fish. His teeth also imply that he is a shark. However, he is explicitly referred to in the game as "Clanker the whale". A possible explanation is that his creator (possibly Klungo or Gruntilda herself) is ignorant of the biology of the whale.
Oddly, Clanker's body also features organic material; for example, exposed flesh is visible on the sides of his body, His interior also seems to support this. For this reason, it is possible that Clanker is a cyborg, rather than a fully robotic creature.
In the Games
Banjo-Kazooie
In Banjo-Kazooie, he appears in Clanker's Cavern. Much of the action in the level actually takes place inside him. There are several entrances to Clanker: the main and most obvious entrance, though his blowhole; through his gills (on either side); or through the gap created when Banjo and Kazooie shoot out his gold teeth. Snippets and Whiplashes both live inside him. Bottles has a molehill inside him, although quite how this works is unclear.
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Clanker appears in Banjoland. He is torn to pieces (his head, torso, and jaw are in different places) yet still alive. The "You'll Go Blind, You Clanker..." challenge focuses on him; in it, Gruntbots are trying to steal Clanker's eyes, and they must be defeated to save him.
Banjo-Pilot
In Banjo-Pilot, he simply appears in the background of the Clanker's River track.
