Conker's Bad Fur Day is a 3D platforming game for the Nintendo 64 by Rare. It is Rare's second "M" rated game, having been released less than ten months after Perfect Dark. Conker is now a cult classic amongst N64 fans, even though it sold poorly because it was published near the end of the N64's life. The game has since been remade as Conker: Live & Reloaded on the Xbox.

Development

Conker's Bad Fur Day was originally titled Conker's Quest, which was later retitled Twelve Tales: Conker 64. Early screenshots suggested the game would feature cute characters and colorful settings. Rare had a long history of making games of this sort, such as ''Banjo-Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing. However, Rare started to fear that the game would simply get lost in the platforming crowd, and critical mockery of "yet another cute platformer" caused the original game to be drastically overhauled.

Once Rare announced that the newly redone Conker would be more adult-oriented than anything else they've done, many did not believe it. Chris Seavor, inspired by the likes of South Park, redid much of the game's art and overall attitude in a adult manner. Seaver voiced Conker, along with all the male characters in the game (except the Great Mighty Poo, who was voiced by Chris Marlow). Louise Ridgeway voiced all the female characters in the game.

The game was different from the Banjo-Kazooie series and Donkey Kong 64, Rare's previous Nintendo 64 games, in relying far less on collecting a variety of items. When items were needed to further the game's story, they were not scattered about; instead, they were nearby. This is a large contrast to Rare's usual antics of hiding out things like money and new moves in various locations. Moves were also simplified by having 'context sensitive' buttons, having them easily understandable to any user.

Controversy

Being that the game is rated M, on a Nintendo console, and made by a part of Nintendo made it a subject of controversial matter. Nintendo, known for its family-friendly games like Mario and Zelda, has never produced an M rated game in-house. CBFD's box is a notable sign at Nintendo's worries on the game: the "M" is larger than any other game box has, and a warning detailing that anyone below 17 is not meant to play it. The ESRB system was still relatively new, and Nintendo was worried that parents may pick the game up because it had furry animals on the box.

Advertisements for Conker's Bad Fur Day were featured in magazines such as Playboy and television commercials only aired late at night. Because of this, the game sold in low quantities as the advertising barely got word out of the game. And with that, Nintendo was losing faith in Rare and sold most of their shares up until the Microsoft buyout of Rare.

Parodies

A lot of Gameplay and the movies are parodies of films, video games and pop culture, they include
The Terminator - The robot boss comes complete with an Arnie esque Austrian Accent.
Reservoir Dogs - The weasels in the multiplayer mode heist are Mr. Red, Mr. Blue, Mr. Green and Mr. Yellow.
Dracula - There is a vampire character who is very similar to Dracula.
The Wizard Of Oz - The main area of Windy has a Yellow Brick Road, plus there's a helpful scarecrow. Chucky Poo's death parodies the Wicked Witch of the West's.
The Untouchables, The Excorsist, The little girl's head rotates a full 360 degrees and her eyes suddenly go green.
Star Wars, Conker's line "aren't you a little short to be a grim reaper" is a based on a line from the first film. The Fairy Panther King's chamber in the bank in "Heist" has a window like the one in the Emperor's Throne room on the Second Death Star.
Apocylapse Now, A Clockwork Orange - The Opening scene with Conker and his milk.
Blue Velvet - The "Do you want to go for a ride" scene is mimicked.
Alien The panther kings alter-ego is a exact copy of the alien, also Conker has a similar space suit.
Aliens Conker's Quote "Get away from her you bitch!" comes from the film.
Full Metal Jacket, Birdy asks for ten dollars for the manual
The Matrix - The entire bank lobby level is a parody of the famous lobby scene.
Monty Phython and The Holy Grail - One character proclaims he's not dead and is "Getting better".
Scarface - Conker says "Say hello to my little friend,".
Jaws A vicious Dogfish rips apart catfish similar to Jaws, then chases conker as he runs along a pier, destroying it similar to Jaws.
Pepsi - Birdy asks conker if he's "Got any Mepsi Pax"?
Saving Private Ryan - The beach scene is an exact replica of the opening of the film, but with squirrels and cartoon gore.
Super Mario 64 - The Final boss is defeated in a similar way to how Bowser is in the game.
Sonic the Hedgehog - The "helicopter tail thing" is based on one of Tails the two tailed fox's primary moves.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - Conker mentions in the War Story "Tediz, I hate these guys!"
