The 2003 prototype build of Diddy Kong Pilot was released to the public as a downloadable ROM on November 5, 2011 by RareWareCentral webmaster Torrentstorm. This version of the game has many differences from the earlier 2001 prototype seen in certain screenshots and videos, but is very close to the finalized Banjo-Pilot game.

Gameplay

The core gameplay of Diddy Kong Pilot is near-identical to that of Banjo-Pilot, with most of the differences being in available characters, track names, etc.

The game is a kart-style racing game wherein players use airplanes to race with characters from the Donkey Kong series. In a manner similar to Mario Kart or Diddy Kong Racing, players can pick up items scattered around the track and use items to gain an advantage over other competitors.

The modes available in this build of the game are as follows.

Cups

The main mode of the game, this allows players to race in cups made up of four tracks and a boss battle each.

Time Trial

In this mode, players can run the track by themselves to try and get the best times possible.

Cranky's Challenges

In this mode, players must race against Cranky Kong on each track. It is required to collect all six Banana Coins on a track and come in first place against Cranky to finish.

Trivia

  • The cutscene shown when a player loses a boss dogfight has a spelling error in it, telling the player "YOU LOOSE" rather than "YOU LOSE".
  • The aforementioned failure cutscene (or sometimes, the version shown when the player wins) is also shown when the player selects "Multiplayer Weapons" on the Options screen for unknown reasons.
  • The K-O-N-G Letters do not appear to have a purpose in this version of the game. It is presumed that they would have functioned similarly to the Musical Notes in the final Banjo-Pilot, allowing players to earn unlockables in the Secrets menu. However, the "Secrets" section of the Options menu appears to not have been implemented as of this build, as it simply brings the player back to the title screen.
  • Finishing the game as Cranky Kong changes the title screen of the game to read "Cranky Kong Pilot" and changes the menu backgrounds from jungle leaves to construction girders (to mimic the Arcade Donkey Kong game), as seen in this video.
