Donkey Kong 64 was one of the best-known 3D adventure games for the Nintendo 64, and one of Rare's biggest games in 1999. It was the first Nintendo 64 game to actually require the Expansion Pak - a handful of earlier games gave you the option to enable hi-res graphics (at the cost of a high frame rate) if you had the Expansion Pak plugged in. Because of this, the Expansion Pak came packaged with the game and thus raised its price by about $20 USD. Thanks to the extra 4 megabytes of RAM afforded by the Expansion Pak, as well as Rare's enriched knowledge of the hardware, gamers were treated to sharp graphics, spectacular dynamic lighting, and enormous worlds. Gamers were introduced to new members of the Kong family: Lanky Kong, Tiny Kong, and Chunky Kong made their gaming debut, each with their own abilities and personalities.
Despite being a hot seller, the game received mixed reviews. The biggest complaints were about the repetition, as you essentially had to go through each of the worlds five times, once with each Kong, and many people referred to the game as a "collect-a-thon." Other reviewers accused Rare of recycling Banjo-Kazooie, or ripping off Super Mario 64. Others said that the game didn't live up to the hype, as it was meant to be Nintendo's big hit of the 1999 holiday season. But many gamers will probably agree that "DK64" holds a certain charm, and that its unique "banana yellow" cartridge deserves a place in every Nintendo 64 fan's collection.

Story
Donkey Kong 64 will be very familiar to anyone who has played any of the Donkey Kong Country games on the SNES. The plot is simple: K. Rool wants to blow up DK Isle by using his secret weapon the "Blast-O-Matic". To prevent the big ape from interfering until it's done, he has the banana horde stolen yet again along with most of the other members of the Kong family. So it's up to DK to get back his horde, his friends and stop K. Rool before his home is nothing more than rubble.
