Donkey Kong Land is a Donkey Kong game developed by Rare for Nintendo GameBoy console in 1995. It is based on the similarly titled SNES game, Donkey Kong Country. The game is not a port of Donkey Kong Country, but is a partial follow-up, taking place between Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Donkey Kong Land features a new story, new worlds and levels, new baddies and new music.

Story
The stoy begins when Cranky Kong claims that the success of Donkey Kong Country was due purely to its fancy pre-rendered graphics, rather than its gameplay. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong become fed up and claim that people liked DKC for more than its graphics, and that it's "just plain fun." Cranky then calls them out on this, challenging them to do the same adventure on a graphically limited system like the Game Boy and see then if it succeeds just the same. After Donkey and Diddy agree, Cranky Kong calls up King K. Rool and tells him to have his Kremling Krew steal the Kong's Banana Hoard once again, only hiding the bananas in new places around the island.
Gameplay
- See also: Gameplay of Donkey Kong Country
Gameplay is much the same as DKC, with a few changes, for example, the player only has one playable character out at a time (Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong), as opposed to both being on screen. When the player breaks open a DK Barrel, the other character is left in reserve. If the player gets hit, characters are automatically switched. If the player gets hit without having a character in reserve, a life is lost. Characters can be switched in and out with the Select button.
The number of remaining lives is measured by small hearts in the corner of the screen.
The KONG Letters in the game also serve a different purpose than in Country. If the player collects all four KONG Letters in a level and then completes the level, they are given the opportunity to save the game.
The game also features the idea of Bonus Rooms from Donkey Kong Country, however, Land takes it a step further by also having bonus exits to some levels, which are placed beyond the normal exit.
Worlds
There are four main worlds in Donkey Kong Land, with many levels in each.
Sequels
The game had two sequels, besides the Country series, Donkey Kong Land 2 and Donkey Kong Land III.
In 2001, a port of Donkey Kong Country for the Game Boy Color was released, but was less well-received than Land.
