Mario

Mario is a Nintendo character, and is the company's primary mascot and arguably one of the most recognizable characters in video game history. Mario is an Italian plumber who, alongside his brother Luigi, frequently rescues the Mushroom Kingdom's princess, Peach, from the evil King Bowser. Due to Rare's previous close working relationship with Nintendo, Mario has been referenced in quite a few Rare games.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Mario makes a physical appearance alongside Yoshi and Link as one of Cranky's Video Game Heroes (ranked by number of DK Coins collected). Until the player, as Diddy Kong collects the 40th DK Coin, Mario stands as the first-place hero, having collected 39 DK Coins.
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (cameo)
In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, when Wrinkly Kong plays her Nintendo 64, a remix of the song "Inside the Castle Walls" from Super Mario 64 can be heard.
Banjo-Kazooie (cameo)
In Banjo-Kazooie, the floor of the water-logged pyramid in Gobi's Valley has a number of stones that match the shape of Mario's eyes and mustache.
Banjo-Tooie (cameo)
In Banjo-Tooie, while Banjo and Kazooie are talking to Loggo, Loggo mentions that he needs a plumber, and Kazooie suggests Mario. Loggo then replies that he "doesn't think Mario does that kind of thing anymore." In the Banjo-Tooie port for Xbox Live Arcade, the reference is changed to a slightly more vague mention of "that Italian plumber."
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (cameo)
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, during the opening sequence, Kazooie mentions to The Lord of Games that he and Banjo have been in several games. However, L.O.G. reminds them that they haven't been in as many as "that Italian gentleman." An Achievement in the game is also titled "Super Banjo Universe," referencing the game Super Mario Galaxy.
