Microsoft Game Studios (MSGS) was branded with its current logo and name in 2002. Prior to 2002, MGS was known as Microsoft Game Division or just Microsoft Games. MGS is a subsidiary of Microsoft which develops and publishes video games for PCs and the Xbox and Xbox 360. MGS publishes games for many Microsoft first-party developers, including Bungie Studios and Rare. Microsoft Game Studios also publishes third-party developers' games, such as Bioware.

Rare Ltd.

On September 24, 2002, MGS officially announced the purchase of Rare Ltd. from Nintendo. The acquisition of Rare means that any original IPs (Intellectual Property) would appear exclusively on Microsoft consoles. As Microsoft doesn't currently have a competing handheld console, Rare Ltd. have a team which currently develops games for the Nintendo DS.

Intellectual Properties such as Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conker are all Rare originals and new games for these IPs can be devolped.
