Biography

Old King Coal is a large creature made of coal that resides in the boiler of Chuffy the train. King Coal is also the owner and operator of Chuffy, and serves as the "voice" of the train (speaking for it as it can't speak for itself). He also does not take kindly to intruders into Chuffy, especially so if they wander into his boiler. His name is a play on the Old King Cole nursery rhyme.

In the Games

Banjo-Tooie

In Banjo-Tooie, Old King Coal resides in the boiler of Chuffy in Glitter Gulch Mine. After Mumbo Jumbo puts the derailed train back on its tracks and Banjo and Kazooie enter it, they cannot use it as Old King Coal tells them to come to his boiler first. As they enter, he jumps out and after a short dialogue sequence, begins a battle against them.

The Fight

The player enters to find Old King Coal walking around the outside of the platforms in the boiler. There is a timer, and using ice eggs is the quickest and most effective way to kill Old King Coal (also shaving off the most health each time), but grenade eggs serve as an effective substitute. During the battle, there are random intervals of turning the boiler on so it is too hot for Banjo and Kazooie to handle. As they attack from platforms, Coal's limbs fall off until he is left with nothing, at which stage a jiggy appears and access to Chuffy is available.

Quotes

From Banjo-Tooie

  • OLD KING COAL: Hurrrr! Who dares enter Old King Coal's boiler?
BANJO: Ahem. I'm Banjo and this is Kazooie.
KAZOOIE: We want to use your train.
OLD KING COAL: Hurrrr! You would, huh? In that case, I'll fight you for it!
KAZOOIE: But you're supposed to be a merry old soul...
OLD KING COAL: Hurrrr! Not me, pal. But you'll soon be feeling my merry old sole on the top of your puny heads!
