Project Dream
From RWP Wiki
Project Dream was the development codename for Banjo-Kazooie. However, it also referred to the game that eventually became Banjo-Kazooie, an adventure game about a boy named Edison. For the purposes of this article, Dream refers to the original version of the game.
Description
Project Dream, a game about a boy named Edison who battles a gang of pirates led by Captain Blackeye, began development on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, by the Donkey Kong Country team, directly after the completion of DKC2. It was planned to use ACM graphics like DKC and would "take them to the next level," however, the upcoming Nintendo 64 rendered ACM obsolete, so development quickly shifted to the N64. By the end of Dream's development, Rare produced a demo (that was loved by the team) with a complete intro sequence about a level's worth of gameplay.[1]
Not much else is known except that Edison was eventually replaced by a bipedal rabbit, and then later, Banjo. Captain Blackeye went on to cameo in Banjo-Kazooie as a portrait in Mad Monster Mansion, and later appear as a minor character in Jolly Roger's Lagoon in Banjo-Tooie (wherein he talks about a "Dream" he had that he "were in this fine game" until a bear "stole his glory").
Grant Kirkhope has released a set of 10 previously unheared tunes from Project Dream on his website. Some, such as the "Bully" and "Madeleine" themes, ended up being used in Banjo-Kazooie and other games(specifically, "Bully" became Mad Monster Mansion, "Madeleine" became Tooty's theme, and "Blackeye" became Gloomy Galleon in Donkey Kong 64).
Further characters from the game, revealed on Grant Kirkhope's website, include a group of trolls (or elves)[2], one of whom was named Bully[3], Edison's girlfriend Madeline,[4], an overweight drunken pirate named Big Belly,[5], and a friendly "mad scientist" pirate named Cockeye.[6]
