RWP Wiki:Manual of Style

From RWP Wiki

The RWP Wiki has a few standards and guidelines to keep in mind when writing articles. Following these guidelines ensures consistency and quality throughout the Wiki.

NOTE: Be sure to check out Help:Editing to find out how to do many of the things listed here.
  • When creating an article, repeat the article's name in the opening of the article, and bold the first appearance of the article name. For instance, the opening sentence of Banjo's page reads "Banjo is a character in the Banjo-Kazooie series."
  • Be sure to check your spelling and grammar before submitting.
  • For dates, the month and day should be typed, but not lined, followed by a comma, space, and a year link, like so: 7 December, 2014 or December 7, 2014.
  • The top-level heading for a section should be 2, followed by 3, and so on. Don't skip levels past 2, and don't use 1.
  • Do not use "you" to refer directly to the reader. For instance, when describing a mission in a game, "you must find and return three items" would be incorrect. Instead, write something along the lines of "the player must find and return three items." However, this rule does not apply to quotes. If you are quoting a person or a game, and they use "you," do not change it.
  • Be sure to link to as many relevant articles as possible. However, an article only needs to be linked from another once.
  • Italicize game titles any time they appear. Also, be sure to use a game's full title the first time it appears in an article. However, if the title is particularly long (for example Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!), it can be shortened on further mentions.
  • Game and character pages have specific layouts that should be followed. Examples can be found here for games and here for characters. Remember, however, that these are only basic guidelines. Unnecessary sections may be excluded as needed, and extra sections may be included as necessary. However, the formats will work generally for most games or characters.
  • Be sure to categorize pages as necessary. For example, when creating a page about a character in Donkey Kong Country, the category Donkey Kong Country characters should appear in the article. Remember to place categories at the bottom of the page on the editing screen, in order to keep page's edit screen organized.
  • When possible, an article should have at least one accompanying image. The first image in an article should be located in an image box, justified to the right of the page, at the article's start.
