Biography
Roysten is Banjo's pet goldfish. He lives in a fish bowl on a table in Banjo's house and usually does not do much aside from swim around in his bowl and tap his head on the edge of it. He serves a running joke in that he has many events befall him that would normally be fatal (for example, being grilled or crushed) but manages to return, in perfect health, every single time. Of his continued survival, an August 2001 Scribes stated: "We didn't think anyone would notice, let alone write a letter about Roysten's problematic existence. Such observation deserves a decent answer. Or maybe not. It is common knowledge that goldfish have very short memory spans, and if it wasn't for this poor Roysten would certainly be dead. Trouble is, he quickly forgets that he is mortally injured and makes a full recovery each time!" [1]
In the Games
Banjo-Kazooie
In Banjo-Kazooie, for most of the game, Roysten is inside his bowl in Banjo's house, continually slamming his head on the wall of it. During the cutscene after Grunty's Furnace Fun, he is seen being grilled by Mumbo, though after the cutscene he will be back in his bowl.
Banjo-Tooie
In Banjo-Tooie, during the opening story, he is back in his bowl in Banjo's house. When the spell Gruntilda blasts the house with hits, Roysten can be seen, meaning he got hit with it just as Bottles did. Afterwards, he is stuck under a boulder near Banjo's house in Spiral Mountain, miraculously having survived the very spell that killed Bottles and destroyed Banjo's house. Breaking the boulder and taking him to the moat around Spiral Mountain gives Banjo and Kazooie extra air bubbles and a faster swimming technique. After he rewards the duo, he oddly fades away.
Roysten is also seen at the end of the game; he ends up being burnt to a crisp and eaten by the recently restored Bottles as part of a fish and chips meal.
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Roysten first appears in his fish bowl in Banjo's house on the main menu screen. He also later appears as the Goldfish accessory vehicle part. Oddly, in this game, no misfortune befalls him, although the description for the Goldfish vehicle part says he will "have major vehicle accidents."
Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge
In Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, during the opening story sequence, he is still on the grill in front of Banjo's house.
Banjo-Pilot
In Banjo-Pilot, he appears in his bowl in the trophy room.
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
In Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Roysten appears in Ghoulhaven Hall's Schoolroom.
Viva Piñata/Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise
In Viva Piñata and Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise, Roysten[2] appears in a fishbowl on top of the head of Miss Petula, the owner of the Paper Pets accessory store.
