Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing with Banjo-Kazooie (or simply Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing) is a racing game developed by Sumo Digital and published by SEGA. The game was released for the Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, PCs running Microsoft Windows, and mobile phones. The game was released on February 23, 2010 in North America,[1] and February 26, 2010 in Europe and Australia.[2][3]
The game is primarily themed around various SEGA franchises, however, Banjo, Kazooie and the Xbox Live Avatars appear exclusively in the Xbox 360 version.[5]
A demo of the game was released onto Xbox Live on February 8, 2010. The demo features only Sonic the Hedgehog and Banjo & Kazooie as playable characters, and features only one race track: Seaside Hill - Lost Palace.[6]
Gameplay
The game is an arcade-style mascot racing game, similar in style to Nintendo's Mario Kart series or Rare's own Diddy Kong Racing. Characters race through various race circuits themed on different Sega franchises and collect power-ups to boost their speed or hamper their opponents. Additional boost can be earned by successfully executing drifts (with longer drifts earning more boost), or performing tricks while in midair. Each character has a special ability (called an "All-Star Move") unique to them that they may use to their advantage (such as Sonic transforming into Super Sonic), which they can obtain if they are running behind in the race. How long each All-Star move lasts depends on the character's current position. Due to network latency issues, All-Star Moves are not featured in online races.
Vehicles are separated into three different categories: cars, bikes and hovercrafts. As the terrain on the tracks will vary, vehicles can be either assisted or hindered by the surfaces they drive upon. Cars vary in weight and speed, with some performing better on some terrains than others. Bikes have fast acceleration and can also perform ground tricks for extra boost, but can easily be bullied by heavier vehicles. Hovercrafts are not affected by any terrain and are able to perform multiple tricks after a jump, but they have poorer handling and have low acceleration. All of the vehicles also have their own specific engine sounds.
There are four single player modes; Grand Prix, Single Race, Missions and Time Trials, whilst modes for split-screen multiplayer, playable with up to 4 players, include Free Race, Arena, King of the Hill, Collect the Emeralds and Capture the Chao. The game also has customizable multiplayer options for up to eight players online (four players on DS version, no online support for PC version).
By playing through the game, players can earn Sega Miles that can be spent in the in-game shop to unlock additional characters, tracks, and songs. The game features a total of 24 tracks based on locations from Sonic Heroes, Super Monkey Ball, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Jet Set Radio Future, Samba de Amigo, and The House of the Dead.
Characters
Racetracks
The game features 24 different tracks to race on, all based on locations from various SEGA video games.
Items
Similar to other kart racers, players can earn items during races by driving over item capsules scattered along the tracks. These items range from power-ups to weapons.
- High Speed Shoe: A shoe resembling Sonic's that gives the player a temporary boost when used. Available as a single item or a set of three.
- K.O. Glove: A green boxing gloves that bounces along the edges of the track when shot by the player and will cause any vehicles it hits to spin-out. Available as a single item or a set of three.
- Rocket: A red missile which homes in on the nearest opponent (marked by a red crosshair) and causes them to spin out when hit. Available as a single item or a set of three.
- Bowling Bomb: A bomb which rolls along the track and then explodes after a few seconds, damaging players near it. Available as a single item or a set of three.
- Giant Rocket: A huge remote-controlled missile which is capable of damaging multiple opponents at one. Pressing the item button causes the rocket to fire and pressing it again near a group of enemies causes it to explode.
- Mega Horn: A set of four blaring horns which blast sound in all directions and damage opponents within close-range of the player using it.
- Confusing Star: A star that homes in on the nearest opponent (marked by a red crosshair), turning their screen upside down and reversing their left-and-right controls.
- Mine: An orange landmine resembling a traffic cone which is laid out onto the track and will cause a player to spin out if they hit it. Available as a single item or a set of three.
- Pocket Rainbow: A small rainbow which is laid out onto the track and will cover a player's screen if they hit it, causing their vision to be impaired.
- Shield: The shield protects the player from damage. It will disappear after a few seconds or when an item hits the player.
- All-Star: An item which is different for each character. If the player isn't doing too well, they may get this item which allows them to use their All-Star Move, giving them an advantage for a short period of time.

Development
Inclusion of Rare characters
Banjo & Kazooie and the Xbox Live Avatars appear as a playable character exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of the game. Banjo & Kazooie's vehicle is a buggy known as the Bolt Bucket (modeled after the vehicles in Nuts & Bolts), and their All-Star Move is the "Jiggy Rain," during which Kazooie uses the Magic Wrench to summon giant Jiggies which fall from the sky, causing the racers to hit them to spin out. The Avatars drive a car known as the Ava-Car 720, and their All-Star Move is "Party Power" (a reference to Xbox Live Parties), in which a group of avatars appears and picks up the Ava-Car 720, then carries it at high speed down the track, attacking any racer who gets in their way.
This game marks Banjo and Kazooie's first appearance in a non-Rare game, as well as their first appearance alongside Sonic the Hedgehog (among others). It is also their third appearance in a racing game, preceded by Diddy Kong Racing and Banjo Pilot.
According to executive producer Steve Lycett, Sega had been showing the game to the various console manufacturers, and succeeded in impressing Microsoft, who suggested Banjo be included in the roster. Said lead artist Dave Blewett, adapting Banjo & Kazooie to fit in with the rest of the cast proved to be no problem given the colorful, cartoonish nature of Nuts & Bolts. Rare was extremely helpful during development, designing and modeling the Bolt Bucket as well as providing any necessary assets such as models, music, and VO from previous Banjo games in order to guarantee the characters looked right.[11][12]
On September 22, 2009, Sega accidentally leaked top secret information from a corporate meeting with Sony Computer Entertainment America, in which it was revealed that characters from non-Sega IP were being considered as platform-exclusive DLC for the game; the notes mention having characters from Rare properties and the Fable universe for the Xbox 360 version of the game.[13] On November 29, 2009, a prototype boxart by designer Chris Lewis was posted on his portfolio website, which depicted Banjo and Kazooie on the back of the box. Access to his site was later blocked off from public access, and Lycett cited the rumors as improbable.[14] On December 15, 2009, images were found on Sega of America's official site, showing Banjo and Kazooie on the Xbox 360 boxart.[15] Both Banjo & Kazooie and the Avatars were officially announced on December 17, 2009.[16]
Initially, neither Banjo & Kazooie nor the Avatars appear as computer-controlled opponents. According to Lycett, this was done partially because players wouldn't want to race against "themselves", as well as so that those opposed to the inclusion of non-Sega characters would never have to encounter them in-game.[17] A patch was released on April 7, 2010, that enabled the use of DLC as well as making Banjo & Kazooie selectable by the CPU.[18]
Downloadable Content
Ryo-F (a version of Ryo Hazuki driving his forklift) was initially offered as a European pre-order bonus for the 360 and PS3 versions of the game; the character became available for purchase worldwide on April 1, 2010. A pack including Metal Sonic and the Death Egg Zone - Egg Hangar track was released April 8, 2010 for the 360 and April 22, 2010 for the PS3.[19] [20]
Sequel
On April 30, 2012, it was announced that Sumo Digital was developing a sequel to the game, titled Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, to be released later in the year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, and computers running Microsoft Windows.[21] Among other things, it was announced that, similarly to Diddy Kong Racing, the game would feature three types of vehicles: cars, boats, and aircraft; however the vehicles transform into each other over the course of a race, rather than the player being stuck with one or the other.[22] However, Banjo and Kazooie do not return for another cameo appearance.
