Squawkmatch is a multiplayer game mode in Banjo-Tooie.

Squawkmatches are first-person shooter games which function like the Breegull Blaster areas in the single player adventure. This type of multiplayer mode was seemingly influenced by GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark.

In a Squawkmatch, two to four players face off in an arena from the game and attempt to seek out and defeat as many other players as possible, similarly to the Deathmatch mode common in multiplayer first-person shooter games.

Characters

The characters available for use in the mode include:

Items

Items appearing in this mode include:

  • Blue Eggs
  • Fire Eggs
  • Grenade Eggs
  • Ice Eggs
  • Clockwork Kazooie Eggs
  • Proximity Eggs: Function like a proximity mine which, when fired, attaches to the scenery and will explode upon being touched by another player, causing damage to them.
  • Rapid-Fire Eggs: These eggs are hard to come by, and they last for 30 seconds, but they are by far the most powerful, hitting in a extremely rapid firing straight line of eggs. The player is allowed to shoot an unlimited number of them for the time that they last.
  • Honey Jar: Temporarily makes the player who collects it invisible.

Stages

The Squawkmatches feature three stages available for play:

  • Mayahem Temple (Targitzan's Temple): Taking place in Targitzan's sacred temple, this stage is most noted for its secret passages containing hidden items, and features a large main area divided with pillars.
  • Glitter Gulch Mine (Ordnance Storage): This stage takes place in the area where Bullion Bill stores his dynamite in Glitter Gulch Mine. It's most noted for its multiple levels, and multiple ramp rooms. The different levels make it possible for one player to "snipe" another from above. This stage is very similar to the Stack multiplayer map from GoldenEye 007.
  • Grunty Industries (Clinker's Cavern): This stage takes place in the sewers of Grunty Industries, where the Clinkers previously posed a threat. This stage is notable for being one of the more complex areas in the mode, and its design causes Proximity Eggs to blend in well.
