Biography
Taj is a large blue pachyderm (elephant), whom enlists his profession as a so-called genie. He is one of the residents of Timber's Island.
In the Games
Diddy Kong Racing
In Diddy Kong Racing Taj, along with the other residence of Timber's Island, is conflicted by the towering Wizpig. He helps the player on their quest to defeat the evil hog. The player races Taj three times, earning one or two ballooons a piece pending on the challenge. When the player talks to Taj on the main Timber's Island hub world, they can choose to change their current vehicle into a kart, a hovercraft or a plane.
At the end of the game, after Wizpig's second defeat, the Wizpig Statue's grate on the frontward mountain of Timber Island is replaced by a gold replica of Taj's head.
Diddy Kong Racing DS
In Diddy Kong Racing DS, Taj's role is mostly identical to his role in the original version of the game. In the Nintendo DS version however, he has five challenges instead of three (included besides the race is a Token Tussle Challenge and a torch extinguishing activity). Also, unlike the N64 version, he is a playable character whom is unlocked after the player completes the first Adventure mode.
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (Cameo)
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Taj is given a mention in LOGBOX 720. During an exchange between Banjo, Kazooie, and Grunty, Kazooie remarks at Grunty's willingness to give up one of her diabolical plans if the duo beats her in a race. Banjo replies, "I was in a similar situation once before, a long time ago, with a genie and a giant pig..."
Other
Taj was to appear in Donkey Kong Racing, but the game was unofficially cancelled and has been in limbo since Rare's departure from Nintendo.
He was also rumored to have been in the planned Diddy Kong Pilot, but no evidence has been conclusive.
