The Actual Fate of Stop 'n' Swop Revealed
A letter has been unearthed in which SnS was discussed in regards to DK64. Clearly it was planned to be implemented at one point, however it seems the suits weren't too happy about this one... Did you notice the same line I did? "...The balance of DK64, including the different ending could remain..." That's right folks. Straight from the Director of Technical Support of Nintendo's mouth. DK64 was going to have an entirely alternate ending if SnS was successfully performed. |
Hope you don't mind the edit to make the post a little better.
But yeah, this is huuuuuge. |
Cold Swap Patent with references to "Huge Blocked Icy Cave" and "Big Icy Key" was released in June 1999. Nintendo asked to remove feature in October 1999. DK64 was released in November 1999.
Its interesting that Nintendo proposed alternate way to include SNS in DK64 without swapping with B-K. This ties to B-K paks in B-T. I still wonder why they didn't include sandcastle codes in B-T. |
There's gotta be more of SNS in DK64. They had less than a month to remove the feature.

All we have is the Ice Key text, right? No model/texture has ever been found for that if I remember right. It does seem super doubtful they could remove all traces of it that fast, or even bother doing so since that might make even more bugs instead of just leaving it buried and inaccessible. Unless they were building the SNS features in a separate version, and they got this answer and just scrapped that and shipped the older, finished version that we got.
