I disagree. I think that, out of all the four DKC games, this one is the weakest. Which is not to say that it is a bad game, it's just not as superb and mindblowing as the previous installments. I felt like the game relied to much on artificial difficulty in that it's basically impossible to clear a lot of the levels unless you know the layout. This with i.e. big spiky deathtraps falling from above without warning that you would only know of if you had been killed by that thing before.
This may be partially nostalgia speaking though. I just didn't enjoy it as much as the other installments. Again, that's not to say that I didn't enjoy it at all.

I never saw any fake difficulty. If you're talking about Boulder Roller, if you stand off to the side for a second or two, you can memorize the spiky death trap pattern stat. Your objective is always perfectly clear; it's just that actually completing it is hard, and that's as a video game should be.
Really, play through it again. Stormy Shore, Tidal Terror, Mast Blast, Teeterin' Totems, Muncher Marathon, Mole Patrol, Tippy Shippy, Slammin' Steel... there are (probably literally) dozens of memorable moments and each stage has its own distinct personality. Yeah, I get it, there's a new bad guy and K. Rool is MIA, but there's nothing wrong with creating new characters and changing the nature of the threat Donkey Kong has to defuse. Besides, we had Cranky, Rambi, and Sqawks, and other characters (including Funky Kong and K. Rool) were alluded to. I see no cause for complaint.

Sounds like you should be talking about this, then.
