Squares/special characters/whatever-the-heck-they-are removed because they were causing some weird errors. Perhaps the game used them for emphasizing text.
There's a ton of really weird/interesting stuff in that text dump. I wonder if "George" has anything to do with George Ice Cube (or whatever his name is) in BT. Good stuff, Sub.
