Maybe because he was busy running away from the cops?
Right at the start he jumped out of the helicopter because he knew he didn't do anything wrong, now imagine if Mario was there he would of been like "Ohhh!" and stayed in the helicopter. But did Sonic stay no, he went and broke out because he likes to be free(another trait to his personality) and right at after the boss battle he sees Shadow and says "So your the impostor, that why they've been chasing me!" well something like that maybe not exactly but you get the point.
