Ok I know this may cause some controversy, but am I the only person who would enjoy messing with a Nintendo made and polished 2D Mario that took cues from the open-world exploration style of the 3D series? I'm talking large levels with plenty of exploration on both axis, an explorable overworld, puzzles and some messed up platforming sections. Feel that they can keep the SM64 model of having Bowser or boss levels be more traditional get to the goal courses.

Mostly popped into my mind because I just remembered sketching out ideas in high-school for reducing Banjo-Kazooie to a 2D plane. I'm a sucker for metroidvania style exploration.
