been playing a bunch of Spyro lately, now that i have a comfy PS3 pad
before last week, i'd only played about an hour into the first one (like ten years ago) and never experienced 2 or 3 at all

playing through Spyro 1 was pure bliss, there's so much good about it - the universe itself is great, stage themes and color variety are excellent, controls feel amazing, the circumference of stage design feels satisfying in a proto-Mario Galaxy-kinda-way - it's simple and clean, and its kingdom has won over my heart

(i'm also a huge fan of the Pilotwings levels [the "flight" stages] and loved how well the game's OST matched the PW vibe)

so, i beat the first one pretty fast, and got close enough to 100%ing that i could go back and finsh whenever, but i decided to start up Ripto's Rage instead - a few hours in, there's a lot of issues that aren't SURPRISING but still kinda disappointing

there's so much artificial padding, and it isn't even like the levels need it - they're just as fleshed out as Spyro 1, but they insist on tedious teeth-pulling challenges anyway. the cutscenes are also really bad, but whatever, they're mostly skippable (though the dragons in 1 had a charm that feels sorely missed), and it has to be said that the Pilotwings stages feel much less finessed. otherwise it's still good, almost even great - just not nearly as cathartic!

Spyro Review Part II coming soon, whenever i finish the second game and play enough of the third
for now:

Spyro the Dragon: 4/5
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!: 3.499999/5

I do not recommend trying to 100% Spyro 2, unless you just really really want to. Some of the backtracking is tedious and requires you to complete whole levels again, only this time with the right ability available to you.

lol maybe I'm biased because I've beaten every game in the OG Spyro trilogy multiple times and am just about finished with 100%ing the Reignited Trilogy, but I never had an issue with the second game's backtracking. Aside from the Alchemist mission (where you have to escort the alchemist AGAIN to do Hunter's mission if you did it before you got the headbash), the OG trilogy cuts down on a lot of the bullshit that plagued other 3d platformers. As far as I can recall in the case of most levels you can just run right to where you last left off if you need to return later on. I did rage quit for a bit after the Reignited Trilogy erased 10% off my Spyro 2 save and made me replay basically all of Winter Tundra, though.

Most of all though Tooie and DK64 really made me appreciate how they didn't go for making the levels ten times bigger than necessary for the Spyro sequels cause goddamn I really don't have the patience for navigating Grunty Industries or Crystal Caves as an adult.

I have 100%ed Spyro 2 three times and every time I always regret spending the time to get the last 5-10%

You do not recall correctly. You have to do the main mission in most levels to progress every single time, because all the doors and shortcuts close again.

You're right, I was mostly thinking of Fracture Hills in terms of levels that required a return trip to 100% cause that one is pretty much opened from the start. For the other levels it honestly wasn't a serious gripe for me since Spyro can speed through the levels pretty quickly and in most cases it's just an object to flame (a button, turtle, tree, statue, etc) before you can progress on to the next section. Also I just love doing a new game plus playthrough with the super flame powerup.

A discussion with my brother turned into digging out Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix for a couple hours. Even after all this time, I still got The Moves. As the announcer asks, yes you can, in fact, call me a Dancin' Master.

Actually, I've been chasing this A Rank high score for literal years- I've gotten A Rank before but not a high score so my B Rank always remained. One time I managed to get the high score A Rank and it was great! And then somehow I got a B Rank that was a higher score and it overwrote my A Rank and I was so mad. Let's hope this one sticks around!!

Satisfied, I set up Banjo-Threeie, only available on the Nintendo GameCube

Well, that's enough of that.

Just started playing Dark Moon. Gotta finish it before the 31st because I hadn't realized Luigi's Mansion 3 was so close to release. I miss the high resolution of the Switch's screen while playing the 3DS again after so long.

I biked for 6 hours the other day at the river nearby and got three shiny Pokemon in Pokemon Go. Shame that the cold season is almost here, because that game has been responsible for a lot of my good physical condition lately, but I really don't wanna freeze my fingers all Winter again .

Thinking of getting Ring Fit Adventure because it looks like FUN? I enjoy exercise, especially with seasonal depression coming. I'm surprised they've waited so long to make games like this for the Switch, since we all know how successful the Wii was.

after completing Spyro 2 (100%, but i only got a few skill points), i read the back of YOTD's case, with all its touting of new gameplay modes and powerups and features, and decided that i'm finished with the Spyro series for now

instead, i've started up my first real run of Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories for the Playstation 1 (which i've seen nills reference a little bit on rwp already), and it's finally starting to make sense - ergo, i'm having a great time, since my #1 degenerate habit has always been TCG games

we're also playing a bunch of skullgirls and other random fighters together, always a relaxing fg to get into - the music and scenery make it impossible to get salty (for anyone, i'd hope), and fukua is one of my favorite fg characters to pilot

a couple days ago we did a 3 player Mario Golf 64 round with my brother, it was really fun doing team taunts with someone else while the other player took their shot

a l s o
gonna try to finish our Silent Hill 2 run before halloween season is over, but my GOSH i'm bad at horror games

This is legitimately the best choice you can make over deciding to play Year of the Dragon.

The weekend, dead on arrival, will be dominated by Xbox 360. I have however refreshed my vista with an E3 2007 Dashboard theme.

On breaks at work I've fallen back into Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, mainly because there were some Halloween events to get special furniture that I was definitely interested in. Combined with some of the Leaf Ticket fortune cookie sets from last Halloween as well as this Halloween, I've got a lot of good stuff!!

maybe don't talk about the skeletons in my closet, yes?

I wish the campsite was bigger- I keep starting over because I have too much good stuff.. they have a cabin now that's like decorating a house in the main games, except they have the "Grim Lily" fortune cookie set that I'm saving my Leaf Tickets for that's pretty much goth wedding, which is about what I expect my hypothetical wedding would look like.

I managed to get a few of the items, including the dress.

Yep, about what I expect my hypothetical wedding would look like.

I'm sure I'll play this on and off for another week or so before it fades from memory like last time...
