Rare made Donkey Kong confusing...
... when they made Cranky Kong the original DK.
If it was Cranky vs Mario in the original Donkey Kong Arcade, then we can assume that Donkey Kong Jr is the current DK we know today. But we must also assume that Cranky must be quite old in DKA anyway. Then, what about Baby Donkey Kong from Yoshi's Island DS? If Cranky was a baby at the same time as Mario, why isn't Mario old and grey? We also have to look at Mario vs Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis. if that's the original Mario, the original Pauline but the new Donkey Kong, why isn't he around the same age as he was when he was Donkey Kong Jr? Also, both Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr appear in Mario Tennis, further confusing the timeline.

I say, you really shouldn't spend too much time working out the complexities of Nintendo/Rare video-game franchises. Some of it just doesn't make sense.
Or any video-game franchises for that matter. |

Judging by your complaints, I'd say Artoon and NST made Donkey Kong confusing, not Rare.

I don't think the Donkey Kong from DKC is Donkey Kong Jr, the instruction manual did place emphasis on him being new:

Apparently Cranky is the Current DK's Grandfather

DK Jr. is current DK's Father, at least, presuming the original DK is DK Jr.'s Father.

We had a pretty deep discussion about this before. (See : http://www.rarewitchproject.com/foru...ad.php?t=14689) And basically we came to the conclusion that... it makes no sense. *nods*

But in DK64, Cranky refers to Donkey as his son.

Know what that means?
Even the game designers have no idea what the heck is going on.

Well, let's see. The first thing that ever happened in Mario history was Yoshi's Island. Yoshi's Island DS happened right after YI1 and it had Baby Mario AND Baby DK. Then came the arcade game, so, it's safe to assume Baby DK is Cranky Kong, and DK Jr. is the DK we have nowadays.
That's what I think

You know how when your cat is 15 it's actually towards the very end of its life? Ok, replace "cat" with "kong." Now the entire timeline makes sense.

So basically: Super Mario Bros. (aka Mario's arrival) -> All kinds of Mario games that don't feature Baby personae or are mentioned to have been babies a long time ago -> All main characters get babies -> All baby games -> Partners in Time -> All games in which babies are also used (which is made possible thanks to the Time Machine from Partners in Time. That way it also seems more logical as of how both Baby Mario and Mario can appear in games like Mario Kart Wii. Donkey Kong's Timeline can be judged from this to, but I can't be arsed to do that too atm. By the way, this also clears up confusion with Bowser Jr. being Bowser's son or not, because in Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser is clearly referred to as 'papa', while in Partners in Time, they don't seem to know each other, that is because Bowser Jr. grew up to be the Bowser we know now. This doesn't necessarily mean that any game with both Bowser Jr. and Bowser will be 2nd generation, because in those games (like Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros.) it's never said whether he is the son of Bowser, or just the past version of him. We, however, can assume that any game with more baby persons that Baby Bowser in it is 2nd gen Mario, while every game with only Bowser Jr. in it, is the end of the 1st gen Mario (which also explains why Jr. is older than Baby Mario, he was born first..). As does it explain why in Mario World, Mario doesn't know the Yoshi, while in Mario World 2 he is on one the whole game. Assumable, Baby Donkey Kong in the first Donkey Kong (aka Cranky Kong), meaning that all Donkey Kong games play with 2nd Gen Mario). And that Jumpman than was still a teenager whereas Cranky was a tad older. Confusing eh? It IS the most logical explanation!
