I feel like Sunshine is in a weird spot as a 3D Mario game because it's propped up by mods such as Eclipse and Sunburn. It's absolutely the 3D Mario I return to most, but it's always because of a mod update. I considered recently how much I enjoy Sunshine versus how much I enjoy its mod versions... I certainly could enjoy it without the extended moveset, but I would sorely miss hover burst and the options that let me get sideways somersault height without space to move.
Meanwhile, I wouldn't say other 3D Mario games need mods to make them play better, not even 64; there's just nothing I can think of that needs added, except maybe button controls for Galaxy. I'm in a strange spot where I enjoy and appreciate Sunshine more because of the mods that improve it. If not for them, it'd be a game I'd think fondly of, not replay somewhat yearly.
