Stop N Swopper (Banjo-Kazooie Level editor)
Hey guys, I'm working on a really big project. That's right, a level editor for Banjo-Kazooie is a really big project, since N64 games are harder to hack than SNES games, I'm going to need a lot of help from you guys. I need texture data for the texture editing feature in my level editor, I need to figure out how decompress ROMs for the Text editing feature and stuff, if you guys would like to contribute on the making of Stop N Swopper (Name of the level editor) then I will give you guys credit. You will see your names in the Help screen. If anybody wants to help out then just post. No negative comments or spam please, let's try to keep this topic as friendly as possible. Also suggestions and ideas for the editor are welcome.
Oh by the way, the reason I call it Stop N Swopper is because of the Stop N Swop feature in Banjo-Kazooie in case you may ask why my level editor is going to be called that. Last edited by Banjo_Hacker; 27th July 2008 at 05:10 PM. |

Not a whole lot of programming yet, that's why I downloaded a Visual BASIC tutorial so it can help me learn the programming language.

Thanks, oh and the icon for the editor is going to be the Pink Secret Egg as it is the first Secret Item you see in the ending after getting 100 Jiggies.

Can I ask you some questions about it?
What language writing it in? DirectX/OpenGL? Experience? Research done on what is known of Banjo? Where are you at? |

This website has a texture editor to help you get the textures. You can find that at http://www.rarewitchproject.com/?id=1426.

Klungo, it only edits Save States not Banjo-Kazooie ROMs, as for SubDrag's questions:
The language it's going to be in, if you mean by programming language is VB. Direct X or OpenGL? Don't know much about those yet. Experience? I never had any experience coding my own level editors but wouldn't hurt to learn how to code level editors. So far, no enemy data or level data has been found on Banjo-Kazooie yet. I think the levels are compressed too, not sure yet. I'm at offset 195001 in the Banjo-Kazooie ROM right now as I'm using a hex editor to edit the offsets. |

So you have no experience whatsoever, and you're making it in Visual Basic. And you're starting with N64?
I suggest you get some experience with SNES or NES before you start on N64.

That's why I said I'm not doing this alone, but yeah you're right. But what game for the NES or SNES should I code a level editor for?

I guess a SMB3 one would be good.
But I didn't see that bit about you not doing it alone. So sorry.

It's ok, everybody makes mistakes, but as for doing a SMB 3 level editor, there's already 2 good ones out there. Maybe I should code a level editor for Big Nose the Caveman, there's no level editor for that NES game yet.

^Hey in all fairness you have to start somewhere... My first website used the 8 HTML tags I actually knew (and not very well), while I'm now (almost) fluent in PHP & SQL

That's right, you do have to start somewhere, but when you announce what icon you are going to use for the application before you even know anything about making it happen, credibility is somewhat diminished.
It's like making a logo before you've even started making a game.
