How can you say Sonic has no personality if you played SA2 , he clearly has one and isn't only in the "MUST SAVE WORLD BECAUSE I CAN" mode. He was full of himself about how great he was, cared about his friends ect... I guess Shadow overshadowed (no pun intended) Sonic from that point, Shadow had a big ego about how great he was, cared about his comrades and shiny rocket skates.

You have to infer almost all of Sonic's personality. He never jumps out and says a long paragraph about his friends or how much he wants to save everybody. He gives occasional lines of unconvincing compassion and then rushes towards the final boss.
Even when the cops are chasing him we don't get any segments like "Man, I didn't even do anything. I wonder what's bugging them. Blah blah blah personal thoughts." He seems more like a robot than Metal Sonic to me.

Sonic has tons of personality. It just sucks. "I'M GONNA JUMP ON THIS XTREME ROCKET POWERED SURF BOARD AND TRY TO WIN SOME OF THOSE XTREME CHAOS EMERALDS IN THIS XTREME RACE EVEN THOUGH I CAN RUN THREE TIMES AS FAST AS THEM. THIS IS GONNA BE XTREME!"
