Kinect Sports Rivals flop
Reading that the game was a flop shocked me. The first two Kinect Sports games sold really well and I expected this to be a best-seller too.
Has anyone here played KS Rivals? Did you enjoy it? Moreover, do you think that Rare might focus on better games now? Maybe they understood that this Kinect fame wouldn't be forever, and now they'll go back to older, or even brand-new IPs. |

I think they get the message. They WILL go back to classic IPs, or even new ones if they are good enough, but I think they are realizing Kinect is stupid. Not only that but we may get more than one game a year (its easier programming for a controller)

Rivals is not a great game, it somehow didn't quite come together right. Kinect Sports 1 and 2 are way way better. I'm not sure how it happened, the casual fun factor isn't as high as the others, lost the simplicity. Perhaps caught between making a real game and a casual one, and something didn't quite click perfectly.

Seems like Eurogamer got the inside scoop:
"Microsoft-owned developer Rare has suffered layoffs after the release of Xbox One exclusive Kinect Sports Rivals failed to set tills alight, Eurogamer can reveal. Multiple, separate sources indicated to Eurogamer that the studio, which has focused on the Kinect Sports series in recent years, had recently suffered layoffs." Quote:
Plus, the original Kinect sold really well, with what I assume was a smaller version of the Wii's success, hitting it big with the casual crowd. So there was an established audience for those first two games whereas with Xbox One... isn't it just a lot of gamer types buying it? That and it's just early in the life cycle. |

140,000 units sold worldwide. Pretty abysmal.

Beside some rare exceptions like CoD and some Nintendo games, or even Goldeneye back in 1997 for that matter, games always sell the vast majority of their total units in the first month. I doubt KSR will ever reach 500k in its lifetime.

About 6 weeks. BK:N&B was considered a flop with far more sales.
To be fair, KS1 and KS2 are on a console with millions of adopters and KSR is on a new console that 12 people own, 11 of which hate that Kinect is included.

Jesus 140k worldwide? Even Wonderful 101 did better than that

Killer Instinct 3 has been doing pretty good, right? Maybe we'll see more classic IP's resurface as a result of this.

Wonderful 101 sold because it's a game on a console that has very few games coming out for it on a regular basis. Kinect Sports Rivals isn't selling because 1)the people who own Xbox Ones aren't casual gamers and 2) the console has a more regular stream of titles coming out for it so people don't need to jump on every title that comes out. If Microsoft hit the blend of casual and core owners they were looking for with the One then this could have sold a lot better, but instead they got only core. I won't be shocked if sales go up in a few years, but the game will be going for much cheaper at that point.

To say Wonderful 101 sold is a bit of an overstatement. .2 Million worldwide is still pretty terrible for a console with the install base of around 4-5 million when the game came out
