Mario or Sonic?

Now, I don't know if I should put it here or Misc. Gaming, but this goes here for know, I guess.

This isn't "Who is better, Mario or Sonic". No. This is about today. As a gamer, who would you say has been the biggest disappointment of the recent years?

Are the Mario games more disappointing? Or are Sonic? These two mega-gods of the days of old are starting to get life support now. It's very clear that Sonic is dying (Tennis? Really?), but while Mario is still popular, he might go soon.

Sonic just hasn't been the same since Sega dropped out of the console market (this is a bit biased, I liked Sonic Adventures 1 and 2). Mario is overly saturated with spinoffs (Tennis? Again?) and Mario Galaxy (in many people's eyes) just wasn't all that good.


So, out of the two faces of video games, which one just makes you cringe the most these days?

In all seriousness, Mario. In my opinion, Sonic's main games have flopped harder than Mario's (Galaxy wasn't great, but it was certainly better than Sonic 2K6). Still, Sonic is confined to actual adventures. Sure, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, etc. weren't that great... but they were still SONIC GAMES. Mario has been shoved into parties, tennis, basketball, baseball, etc. The market is becoming grossly over-saturated by these titles, none of which achieve any supreme excellence on their own.

Sonic is involved in the new tennis game, but it isn't Sonic tennis: It's SEGA Tennis. I think that Sonic/Mario at the Olympics is a good sign that one day the two combined will truly whore out every possible side-franchise.

I'd have to go with Mario. I, like many others, probably wouldn't have been playing video games if it weren't for Mario. I love Sonic games, but he hasn't had a good game for quite some time, while Mario is still going strong.

Sonic's been a bigger disappointment of recent. Super Mario 64 is one of the best games there ever was, and although the more recent Mario games haven't lived up to it, they're still superior to Sonic, I'm afraid. Love both characters though! XD

EDIT: I voted "Sonic" in the poll- meaning he's the greatest disappointment. that's the correct way of voting, right? :s

I vote for Mario because, in all honesty, I'm not that familiar with Sonic's games. I think he's a has-been; an apparition; a ghost from the past that won't exorcise itself. I remember playing that Mario Party rip-off on the Dreamcast. It's funny, even when Sonic wants to try his hand at other things, he's copying someone else. His "too cool for school" attitude is a huge turn-off and I have a real distaste for that 80's punk hairstyle he rocks. Not to mention the seemingly F-Zero inspired music is straight out of a generic rock band album from none other than the 80's. Sonic can't quite get with the times, and maybe his latest games show that. I wouldn't really know, though, because like I said, I'm not all that familiar with him.

Mario's got some annoying quirks about him as well, but it's child's play compared to Sonic's lameitude. Sure, I lost all interest in Mario's parties since the 5th version. Sure, his spin-offs are numerous and uncalled for. But really, when you really look at it, none of his games are BROKEN. There still are good qualities about them and they're still very enjoyable. Not to mention they still know how to get his adventure games right, and that's what really counts.

So, in summation, Sonic just needs to die already. Abandon ship, Sonic fans, and jump in the warp pipe.

Well, I'm probably gonna be called a complete freak, but I voted Mario because I actually LIKE the new Sonic games. And at least he's sticking to his guns way more than Mario. I was very disappointed with Galaxy because it's taken such a long time, and as such you'd expect it to absolutely incredible, and at least on par with 64. But there was something about it that just seemed somewhat bland. I can't put my finger on it.

And here's the thing which most people will call me crazy for: I only liked Sonic 1 out of the 2D Sonics. So the disappointment for me was finding that none of the other 2D ones were any good. However, I liked most of the 2D Marios. So for Sonic to go from games that I thought were mediocre to, what I thought, were some really great games, and for Mario to do the opposite, just makes Mario more disappointing.

However. They're both still awesome
