Lightbulb Mario / Sonic crossover?

See, I think this would be a neat idea. Now that Sonic has been (kind of, sort of) welcomed into the Nintendo universe after Smash Brothers, I think it would be the coolest thing in the world if someone made a crossover game. But not something lame and gimmicky like Olympic Games, an actual action platformer, maybe something similar to Donkey Kong 64, where the worlds of Mario and Sonic collided (although maybe not literally as a plot device) and you could play as either one of them and maybe other characters from their series. Cannon-fodder enemies from both universes could be walking around for either character to beat the crap out of, and we could see Bowser and Dr. Robotnik cooperating to defeat their arch-nemeses and finally do whatever it is that they've been wanting to do all these years.

Do you think, if this was made as a serious game, it would work?

Let's see...

Nintendo's latest platformers were horribly linear and easy.
Sega's latest platformers were horribly broken and sucky.

That pretty much dooms a Mario/Sonic crossover to having terrible controls and tons of glitches, being linear and simple, and blowing in general.

In theory it would be awesome, though.

See, when you think about it, the Sonic and Mario worlds are very similar to begin with... in fact, they could very easily have been the same one all along. Both their worlds feature modern fantasy settings with very few human inhabitants but plenty of anthropomorphic creatures and strange imaginary races. for instance, I feel the Toads and the Chao may even seem to have spawned from the same primordial genus. And whereas in the Super Mario Brothers universe, the only humans in sight are Mario, Luigi, Wario, Daisy, and Princess Peach, in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe only features Dr. Robotnik, his ancestor, and that girl related to him. (sorry, I'm not too Sonic-savvy) It's not hard to imagine any characters at all as "realistically" part of the other world. The visual aesthetic is even slightly similar, especially in the 2D games.

My idea of the "framework" of this game is sort of like a mixture of Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario Brothers 2, and the Subspace Emissary. First we have a vast 3D world with premium graphics and non-lineary gameplay featuring tons of places to explore. Secondly, we have the opportunity to use any of a number of characters and to switch from one to another at any time. Thirdly, all characters have different abilities, but there is no definite pattern to how often and when you have to use any of them, and it's all according to what's easiest for you.

Characters that in my head should be available:
  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Toad
  • Yoshi
  • Peach
  • Sonic
  • Tails
  • Knuckles
  • Shadow
  • Amy

I'm not too sure about Shadow, but I don't know that many Sonic characters. Maybe the Robot...?

Get Rare to make a game with main characters that are specifically Nintendo and Sega's? Not gonna happen. Rare can't simply take Mario and Sonic from those guys. Don't get me wrong, Rare's a big contender, but I doubt they're as big as Nintendo, however they have definately passed Sega up, in my opinion.
