Dig into Anna America’s name and you’ll discover quite a story.
Anna America was born Anna Weiszmann. Yes, District 7 City Council voters, you just elected a woman who walked out of sixth grade in Spokane, Washington, 40 years ago as Anna Weiszmann and returned for seventh grade as Anna America. She said her father “just came in and said, ‘We’re thinking about changing names.’ He wanted something more interesting.” Bob Weiszmann was always looking for something more interesting. A construction and restaurant worker, he never had more than a couple of pennies to rub together. But his sense of adventure was plentiful. “My parents were a little too late to be hippies” but lived that way, America said. “Three different times, we literally moved into the woods and built a house.” America, 51, can still remember the day in 1969 when her father and mother, Linda, decided to sell everything in their suburban Chicago home and buy a Volkswagen bus. She was in the first grade. “He drove us into Canada and Alaska and ended up buying property in Idaho,” America said. The family lived in a log cabin on the top of mountain and melted snow for water. Little Anna Weiszmann rode a pony down the mountain to catch the school bus. It gets better: One of her brothers, John, grew up to be a U.S. Marine, where he earned the rank of captain. Yes, Anna America’s brother was Capt. America.
