I thought the Switch has accounts tied to it though, why is this a necessity if the account doesn't have parental controls on it?

Because this is Nintendo. If you want an online system that makes sense, you are in the wrong place.

You'd think they'd have learned by now. At least you can play online with strangers without needing friend codes... I never understood why they are so adverse to keeping up with modern online practices.

That's great, why the hell is it at a later date? Friend codes were a stupid system when they were introduced, let alone a decade later. It seems especially unnecessary considering we have real account names now, and the Switch even has options for adding friends via social networks or Miitomo. Sigh.
