Been playing Bioshock remastered, and I had forgot great of a game Bioshock is. Although I accidentally avoided two fights that should have triggered but didn't because I was letting one of Cohen's masterpieces run around while I searched everything.

I've also been doing this, and god damn. Bioshock is just as great as I remember.

I would have gotten these on Steam but I recently played through 1 and 2 after I bought the Bioshock collection. I just need to finally get around to installing Infinite one of these days.

the plot of tales of zestiria is you play tales of zestiria, and then you watch the tales of zestiria anime and get a plot that makes sense, where the knight princess alisha is given a role beyond being your best princess buddy who always got your back until they write her out of the game for thirty hours

Replaying Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for some reason. I think I just crave mindless audio-visual stimulation. On hard mode I actually died against a regular enemy and lost that 45-minute session of progress, which in this game is half mashing the b-button through constant perfunctory tutorials and dialogue and skits that much less tolerable than in the previous games. Even though Dream Team is the last Mario RPG to have featured brand new characters and not just a formulaic plot, the big twist is that the new main villain sucks, and Bowser is here to establish the status quo and crush our hopes at an original tale in a Mario RPG ever again. And after Sticker Star, Paper Jam, and now Color Splash, the coffin is nailed shut.

a common occurance in this household is to exclaim desire to purchase that game, then remember that the GCN's d-pad is literally just a taunt button for melee and impractical in every other way

Pokemon Blue (Game Boy, 1999)

The hottest meme of the last five years has been for modern-day Pokemon fans to vehemently denounce the predecessor of their special interest by labeling fans of them the ridiculous term "genwunner" and defend the modernized think tank approach to creature design by trying to insinuate that Pokemon design was never that clever to begin with, cherry picking creatures like Voltorb, Exeggcute, and other non-animal designs that don't have an immediately obvious purpose in a biological setting.

Look, I get it. The dudes who have stretched ears and snapbacks and show up to easycore shows with their Charizard tattoos and go on and on about "muh childhood" are obnoxious and unpleasant to have a discussion with about anything meaningful. But it's almost like this caricature has become the entire image of people who find special meaning in the Pokemon games before they became less of an artistic vision and more of a corporate symbol, and anybody who even suggests they prefer the original aesthetic and feel of the Game Boy games is drowned in a sea of textual hyena screams.

Pokemon, at its conception, was a world that existed within Satoshi Tajiri's mind, taken from his own personal life experiences of growing up, collecting insects and spending time at his parents' shop where he would play arcade games. Alongside lifelong friend Ken Sugimori, whose concept art of Tajiri's vision was at once vividly colorful, imaginative, and eloquently simple, the game's creature designs gave off a feel that they could fit alongside actual animals and plant life in the real world. A lot of what makes Red/Blue work so well for me is that dynamic, to be honest - a scientist mentioning Russia, an American war hero, a reference to the 1969 moon landing, a South American origin story - these games feel like they take place less in a world of pure fiction, and more of an alternate version of Japan that could really exist.

When people try to defend modern design of Pokemon creatures by saying "yeah, maybe ice cream Pokemon are dumb, but so is this!", I think they are looking too much into the physical design of a specific creature and not the way that they fit into the universe they're placed in. A Pokemon like Voltorb makes sense in a run-down, abandoned power plant, simply with the way that the concept of evolution is presented in the world of Pokemon itself; it's entirely plausible that a biological creature could evolve to take on the same appearance as a Poke Ball to protect itself in the wild. Same goes for Grimer, who are found in a factory setting where they exist within and feed upon the waste produced by industrial buildings. Even though there were still a handful of people who worked on the designs of the original 151 Pokemon, their biology and purpose are all immediately obvious to me, and I love the way it all intertwines.

I know that the battle system of the game can be easily critiqued too, and I understand that there are glitches and oversights that should have been fixed, but I also think that people go a little overboard with criticism of this aspect. One of the only major problems in this regard, to me, is that Lick (the only damaging Ghost-type move) doesn't actually affect Psychic-types, despite the in-game dialogue suggesting that Ghost beats Psychic. It makes the Gengar line's nerf of being half-Poison seem kind of ridiculous, but most Psychic types are answered competitively by Chansey anyway, so it ends up largely being a moot point. Otherwise, I don't think that things like Rage or Focus Energy being incorrectly coded is a major deal since those moves aren't great anyway, and a lot of these problems only affect the social aspect of the game which is virtually nonexistent nowadays, so I don't think that it's an entirely fair detraction.

Other than Super Mario 64, this is my favorite game of all time, but I can't even call myself a Pokemon fan anymore. The implication of labeling yourself such is that you're buying into a brand, when I really want little to do with the brand itself. I guess I'm like that with a lot of things personally, but this seems to be the one franchise that has such a rabid and vile fanbase, and it's always disappointing that I have so few spaces to even talk about how much I love them.

5/5

Okay so being completely serious I've been trying to do some research into buying a TG16/PC Engine and there is seriously so much to learn and consider that it makes the 32X and Sega CD look like child's play:

https://playlegit.net/2012/10/05/tur...o-do-it-right/

There's so many words here and I don't know what any of them mean but I'm trying to decipher it and it just gets worse as I go. My best option is to buy a console, then send it off to someone to mod it for me? Where do I even find these people? I just want to play Dungeon Explorer and want my girlfriend to be able to play YU-NO but it feels like trying to jump through a flaming hoop 100 feet in the air and land in a kiddie pool of water
