I've been playing Rockman X Dive and just got a ton of DMs from a player named Zero, with an av of Zero's demon form. The DMs are entirely in Spanish.

Heh! You fool! I've no need for your pathetic "gacha," now that I've simped the most important character to star-rank five!

i spent february through march playing through and beating persona 2: innocent sin for the ps1.
been meaning to write at length about it but tl;dr i enjoyed it immensely and in some ways i think it plays more like a life sim than later installments of peru sauna??? that might sound a little suspicious but i swear i'll write more about this concept (and many other vague concepts) when i put more time into solo writing.

for now, just know that this game is The Real Real and I Love It.

Well, I'm nearing the end of Higurashi. It's been a ****ing incredible ride, and I'm gonna feel empty being finished with it. What started as a murder mystery in a small town has evolved into something really grand and surprisingly experimental.

Initially I was scared off from the series due to it's original infamously gory and exploitative anime adaption. And the VN definitely has some disturbing horror in it. But there's so much more to the heart of the series. While the horror is there to move you along, the strongest part of the series is really the shit like:

There is some additional Higu content that might be worth looking into after finishing the VN series, but what I'm looking forward to the most is the next entry in the "When they Cry" series. That being Umineko, which I'm told is just as good if not better -- somehow. Its connections to Higurashi aren't really the point, but given what I know about Umineko, I am curious to see how they're tied together.

Anyway, X Dive is actually really fun because you can use a controller and it feels like a legit Mega Man X game. With that being said:

i had a similar experience learning about higurashi (i watched the first 8 or 9 episodes of the anime on yt in like 08/09. 240p quality with the part 1/3 shit u guys remember that??? illicit jank anime watchin) and i didn't want my initial knowledge of the series to spoil ala at all so i sat back and let him play on his own before his laptop exploded.

...ok so i hovered over a couple times. but one of those times was a classroom scene where rena essentially says "live every day to its fullest, because tomorrow could bring disaster."
which is a really good scene in itself given the nature of what higurashi is (albeit from my fragmented knowledge!!), but i've also just been thinking about it a lot in my everyday life.

weezer - thank god for (anime) girls

alright so we need to talk about innocent sin for a couple minutes

this is one of the best jrpgs ive ever played for ike 4903 different reasons (i just keysmashed that sorry) that i gotta spit

there's spoilers popped up all over this thing i'm sorry
Spoiler:
this ****ing game has the best cast of characters i've ever piloted in a plot driven video game. each one of your party members feels like they're your tight friend (which they realistically should, given that they're all childhood friends, but they flow REALLY WELL WITH IT, and it shines with darn near every room interaction you share with them. this is a 80+ hour rpg so there are a LOT of screens with a LOT of opportunities to interact with your party.) the game's formula is almost one part rpg, one part vn in that sense and it owns.

according to gamefaqs this is a 60 hour game but do u want my honest opinion? **** that. meander this game. spend your late game wandering the abandoned factory and experiment with demon contacts for fun. take the time to talk to your party and any NPCs you come across throughout the game, and keep talking to them over the course of your playthrough. play some video casino games with your friends. buy CDs and go back to maya's dirty apartment and listen to them and just chill.

----------------
an imp theory: i think some dudes at atlus played through ff8, got to the big orphanage reveal, and said "hahah man nooooo... that's not.... how i'd do that, if i made something like this, woah hold up-" and boom here we are.

on a somewhat related note, i found myself thinking about ff6 a lot during my playthrough of p2. the way
personas influence your stats during leveling reminds me of the esper system which is something i enjoy fiddling with in my ff6 playthroughs.
also, the first and second halves of the game are split into that 'Here's the World, Ahhh Shoot Here's the World Now' both games use their perceived story climax to push you down the slide into The Actual (heeho)'d Up Things You Gotta Face.
mm mm love that in the bideo game.
----------------
another imp theory: persona 2 is a more accurate portrayl of life than later persona installments. persona
2 is the "REAL life sim."

k hear me out idk if i'll explain this well
so i've seen people online talk about the tedium of persona 2's gameplay. how it plays too much like early megami tensei, but hold up

i actually think that the dungeon crawling and frustrating amount of random encounters is a good thing for a couple reasons.
first off, you have the option to up and leave almost any dungeon you find yourself in to heal/buy
items which is in and of itself a nice gameplay element. but also? it can be incredibly refreshing to just step back out onto the overworld map after one of these grinding sessions.
one of the things i liked a lot during my playthrough was wandering into a shop only to have someone drop some profound-ass wisdom in my lap in the form of a single box of text.

life's about tolerating as much tedious bullshit during the hard times, so that you can return to the things you really enjoy doing until it's time to face more challenges.

sometimes, life's also about helping your friends face their own challenges, even if it means letting them
learn from their own choices, or telling them something they're not quite ready to hear. sometimes life tells YOU those things you're not ready to hear and you have no choice but to confront it directly and fight it head on.

(a whole 45 minute college thesis about shadows and representations of the hidden self could be here but i really want to stop this and eat some cheerios soon.... i'll just say real quick that i think the apex of Accepting The Darkness Within One's Self is strong in Tsumi.)

(another 45 minute ramble about dreams and ideals and the subtle affects of shadow sickness on the NPCs throughout the world of P2 would go here but GOD they're APPLE CINNAMON CHEERIOS i WANT some damnit)

hey on another note have i talked about how i really like tatsuya?
i like how he's his own character within the ethos of p2's universe but how your direct control of his character, where you choose to go in your down time, or what choices you make throughout the game lets him take on more of a self-insert role. you're tatsuya (or whatever name/nickname you give yourself). you're presented with some personal questions right out of the gate (which i recommend answering within the role of You the Player for The Optimal Gamer's Experience trademark), you're free traverse the city as it opens up throughout the course of the game at your own leisure. you can go to a restaurant and order your own food. it's a small layer of game immersion that gives the game some cool flair that i appreciated.

towards the final chunk of the game, you're even offered the choice of forming a romance with one of your party members (in the form of a new contact option with them). it's a small addition, but it's an additional layer to an already enjoyable freeflowing game with enjoyable characters so, like, i dunno man it's a good bonus. there were a couple of those little side additions i noticed through my playthrough, like being able to form a mini band with my guy friends because i told eikichi i could play the guitar, or my character coldly shutting down the advances of his female childhood friend, because he wanted to hold hands with his other childhood friend. . . the pretty boy keyboardist of our cool visual band.

ok but the heartwrenching punchline is in this game is every choice you make throughout this game leads to the same destination, because life is also dictated entirely by chaos!! that point, like the tip of the lance of longinus piercing your most vital organs, is why you shouldn't just rush through this experience so quickly and complain about the tedium! whoopee!!
Are you really sure? Yes, I'm sure Clicking this link will show a major spoiler. Don't do it if you don't want to know! Show Me!

um so this is getting very out of hand... i think i'm gonna ease the brakes on this.
just wait until 2022 when tim rogers finally puts a video out on this game that says maybe some of the stuff i wrote here, but will say it a lot better because i'm a dumble**** fujoshit.

also snix i never did! ala was on episode 3 i think when his lappy died
and then over the course of me writing my post it came back to life so hey!

whenever ala finishes his playthrough (which might be a minute given the Crawling Chaos teeming in our daily lives), i'll sit down and play through it myself and i'm lookin forward to it.

Spoiler:
my cheerios were good btw Are you really sure? Yes, I'm sure Clicking this link will show a major spoiler. Don't do it if you don't want to know! Show Me!

God, I'm really due for a replay of Persona 2 soon, it's been a decade. And as time goes on and as I read other discourse it becomes more and more apparent that the recent personas have trash writing. It's surface level, thrown together, in poor taste way more than you'd expect. I dunno about 3 but I'm kinda nervous to replay 3 because it holds a sacred place in my heart.

But yeah, when I played 2 ten years ago, I thought it was good, but I don't think my high school ass brain appreciated or understood it as much as my brain can now. I've thought Ulala from EP has owned during the entire decade tho

Returnal is a really hard rogue like, which feels great to play, but since runs can take hours and there's no saving mid-run, I find it hard to imagine when I'd ever take the time to start another run.

The Hitman: World of Assassination trilogy that came out in 2016, 2018-19 and 2021 are my favorite games right now. The NPC's are so goofy, it's just so fun to me

i recently played through/watched the entire danganronpa trilogy and also v3. my opinion is that danganronpa 1 is neat for what it is, 2 has some cool moments but is kind of a mess, and danganronpa 3. i liked danganronpa v3 a lot though, it builds some cool momentum and has a very weird and interesting cast and it only really slips up in how it uses them a couple times, and the ending is a fun way to conclude the series

i've also been replaying the mega man zero/zx games since i got the legacy collection. i'm definitely gonna rec it as the ideal way to play them, the port can be slightly fiddly if you want pixel accuracy but the few extra bits they added including the optional checkpoint system and the ability to use zero 3's e-reader functions are fun and fix some of the biggest issues with zero 1 and the zx games, and being able to mod the music to insert tracks from the remix albums is a fun way to re-experience the games

also been playing through the atelier dusk trilogy, not much to say about them other than that they're really unique and fun games with cool atmosphere. wish the pc ports were better though

also been playing drakengard. it's drakengard. i like the later games in the series more but i can't say i don't appreciate how wild the first one gets

also starting up a playthrough of knights of the old republic 1. i'm playing too many rpgs. i think i appreciate this game more now though, it's not amazing or anything but it doesn't have the things that bug me a ton in modern bioware. fun to dick around in

at some point i want to get back to reading all the vns i've got, i've had that one h vn about lesbian gundam designers on hold for a month or so

I think I am happy with my choice of how I consumed Danganronpa 1 and 2, someone basically wrote up a walkthrough including all the dialogue and plot beats. Was able to binge through them over the course of a week each. I think I started reading through 3 as well, but got confused and lost interest after the first big twist. Basically I found the story and concept to be really interesting, but didn't see the gameplay as being engaging enough to get me to put the time in. The death scenes are so silly tho lmao

Still chipping away at Yakuza 3, it has made me want to get a hanafuda deck so I can try to teach people koi-koi to play on camping trips.

Oh no that wasn't Dangan Ronpa 3, DR3 doesn't have gameplay because it's two separate anime you're supposed to watch together. It serves as the conclusion to 1 and 2. And it's awful.

Dangan Ronpa V3 is the third mainline game, and it distances itself from the first two.
