it looks like a fangame but also what sonic 4 should've been in the first place

That make sense, that Whitehead guy had worked on porting the original games to mobile on his own before Sega hired him. I think he might have even been working on a fangame at one point.

It looks promising. We haven't had a legitimate sprite-based platformer in a while.

It certainly looks like it's going to carry on the Sonic 2D games better than 4 did, but... they weren't even the best Sonic games, so I can't really be excited for it. Still not sure why they ignore what made Adventure 1 & 2 so great to try to cash in on nostalgia, instead of innovating.

I feel like you could describe Sonic as "pandering" for a long time. SA1 had Gamma, which was meant to cater to all those kids emailing Yuji Naka with "give Sonic a gun." And then that went even further Shadow The Hedgehog.
Recently, and for several games, they didn't have any playable characters other than Sonic because people were complaining about characters. And then Sonic Generations introduced sidescrolling gameplay in junction with modern Sonic gameplay to cater to both fans of the classic series and fans of the modern series. Yeah, Mania is totally trying to appeal to classic fans, but I think they're doing it in the best way possible. They're getting guys who were apart of the community, making fangames on their own for no profit, out of their love for the series, to develop this game. Not only are they going back to sprites, but they're drawing new ones and I think they're animated beautifully. They're even introducing a new movement mechanic which seems to be about going to the ground in mid-air an immediately initiating a spin-dash. I'm not saying you're wrong for being down of Mania, not by any means, but I feel it's focusing on one core group of players is better than what the early-to-mid 2000's games suffered from, which was cramming a whole bunch of ideas into one game to try to appeal as many people as possible. edit: Or I guess what I should actually say is all games except for the most indie, most artsy, most 4deep8you games try to pander to some audience.

I totally forgot about the Advance games, and I actually liked those a lot.
