what is Shadow the Hedgehog?

Im a bit confused with shadow in the sonic series. In sonic adventure 2: Battle Shadow died at the end. Then at the near end of Sonic heros there were a bunch of Shadow Clones/Robots(i forgot which). Shadow the Hedgehog game made no sence of telling us other then that he cant remember anything and that Black Doom helped create him.
So what is Shadow the Hedgehog?hmmmm

What's even worse is the fact that Shadow's appearing as a playable character in the new Sonic and the Black Knight.

Let's Recap:

First they make him a great character in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
Then they make a horrible spin-off where they give him a gun
Now they give him a suit of armor, change his name, and a sword

What's the world coming to....

So yea, he was the ultimate life form, now he's just toast

Er... As far as I understood, Black Doom or whatever assisted Robotnik's grandfather (I refuse to call him Eggman, by the way) in creating the Ultimate Life Form- first that Bio-Lizard as a test and then Shadow. Then Shadow went and saved everyone from the falling doomsday devise in Adventure 2. He was supposed to have died or something, but he didn't actually, but he forgot everything. Just in time for Black Doom to help regain his memories. The link between him and Maria was I think that she treated Shadow like an actual being and not an experiment. As for Sonic Heroes, I think Robotnik or his grandfather had a bunch of redos or previous attempts at creating/recreating the Ultimate Life Form.

Yeah, I really don't know- I'm just trying to give a serious answer compared to the others.

As for what he looks like in Sonic and the Black Knight... Er... Wtf?
